"There’ll no doubt be another opportunity in the future."
"There won’t be another. This is the last."

Never Never Theatre Company (NNTC) is proud to present UNEND, a new Australian work by emerging playwright Harry Black, whose debut play, The Midwife, was performed last year to sell out audiences as part of the Sydney Fringe Festival.

In 2020, the Sydney Botanic Gardens are on fire.  A wall of flame advances on the Harbour, destined to leave nothing in its wake.  Steam rises over the boiling ocean.  Against this unfortunate background, two women meet at a park bench. Ostensibly, they are strangers, thrown together before a hellish landscape, compelled to discover more about their respective histories and use each other to survive. It soon becomes clear, however, that their reality it predicated on artifice and performance; a series of games and deceptions; an utterly unique melodrama.

UNEND
explores how and why we construct our lives the way we do, and the consequences of deviating from the narratives we author and the comfort they provide.

The play's unconventional structure and unrelenting shifts in tone guarantee a provocative, outrageous and always hysterical theatrical experience. UNEND is directed by Jessica Arthur, whose recent work assistant-directing at both the Sydney and Melbourne Theatre Companies, as well as Sydney's The Kings Collective, has been met with critical acclaim.

During her time at ACA she collaborated with directors Samantha Chester, Adam Cook, George Ogilvie, Jennifer West, Dean Carey and Anthony Skuse. Her most recent run on stage was in Sheridan's The School for Scandal at the New Theatre, directed by David Burrowes. Emma can be seen in the second season of the soon to be released comedy web-series Fragments of Friday (Endemol Australia) written and directed by Kacie Anning, and on stage again this Sydney Fringe in The Wonderful World of Dissocia (The Kings Collective) by Anthony Neilson. ABOUT US | NNTC

NNTCNNTC fosters new Australian works and never underestimates the
imagination of young Australian artists in the Performing Arts…

“I’ve secretly been writing plays at work when my boss isn’t watching”,
confessed emerging playwright and lawyer Harry Black to his sister Lily.
“Good heavens”, she thought, “he’s lost his marbles”. Lily read his play
and reckoned it was half a chance. She showed it her fellow collaborator and friend, Alexandra Nell who replied “He’s alright at this caper!” Lily and
Alex then sought the expertise of production wiz, Liam Barwick. And thus, a Theatre Company was born.

At NNTC we believe you should never deny the creative truths you hold
deep inside even if your boss, your parents or that investment
banker from Tinder think you’re a whisk short of a kitchen drawer.  Apart from creating human rolling pins and wailing on the ground like a baby, the most important thing we’ve learned about independent theatre is to collaborate.
We want to collaborate with the lost boys, the experienced Captains, the Tinkerbells, the production beaus, the hip designers, the passionate directors, the Bourkes and the Wills heading off into the Australian artistic Never Never.

How The Funds Will Be Used

NNTC is a brave new theatre company which adopts George Bernard Shaw’s observation of youth: “It’s all the young can do for the old, to shock them and keep them up to date”. NNTC is a living, lovely and enviable entity. It promotes art forms which call upon a sense of personal fantasy. We aim to shock audiences, but above all, transport them to a place of wonder by the crisis of performance.

The company is run on a volunteer basis and it is committed to producing original contemporary Australian theatre of the highest quality. Our incredibly talented creative team has a bold, modern vision for UNEND. We have secured a rehearsal space and a performance venue (PACT Theatre) and we seek to finance in-house production costs only. The funds raised via our pozible campaign will go directly towards the production budget of UNEND. The money we crowd fund will be spent on set construction, props, costumes, as well as sound and lighting design.

Your support will have a direct impact on the quality of the production.

The Challenges

Fortunately, we have a wonderful team willing to donate their time and effort to this project on the abysmal salary of a can of baked beans we're paying them each week. Considering their stellar contribution, our biggest challenge is fundraising. Without your help we simply cannot put this show on.

Independent theatre presents artists with the challenge of doing things to the best of your ability despite minimal funding. The centre-point of this conceptual play is an inescapable fire and this aspect poses an exciting challenge for us to tackle. We aim to overcome and conquer the challenge with a bold concept in  order to provoke the audience into actively considering the future of our environment.

So the bold concept for this fire? With your funds, combined with the creative mind of our designer, Jeremy Allen, we hope to bring the heat of this fire to life. However, we might not be able to if we can't reach our target. If this happened, our poor old Stage Manager Liam is prepared to stand on prompt side with a wax candle continuously whispering 'suspend your disbelief' to the audience. For his sake and yours, we really hope it doesn't come to this.

There are fantastic rewards available for each donation and we sincerely hope we can generate enough support to tell this beautiful, absurd story. We aim to be as resourceful as possible and your donation will stretch far.

Thank you!
