The Bean Counter
Hello!
My name is Alice and for those of you I don't know I'm a theatremaker, actor and clown.
I'm bringing my new show The Bean Counter to the Adelaide Fringe this month (February 2018) and I'm trying to raise a few beans to help cover the costs of performing it. Here is the link to the show in the programme: https://adelaidefringe.com.au/fringetix/the-bean-counter-af2018
The Bean Counter is a clown character comedy. In it, I play a meek and reluctant clown, Fifi, who has been unwillingly thrust into the spotlight as a Jelly Bean Counting Compeition Official. She officiates and counts beans as best she can however numbers aren't her forte and for unknown reasons favouritises red beans over blue ones. Suffice to say her counting methods are a little unorthodox and elicit some surprising results. The show is very interactive and has proved fun with beans big and small.
I first performed the show as a scratch (short, work in progress performance) at the Clown Cabaret Scratch Night, Edinburgh in 2016. I have since developed it as I go, performing in sharings and at a few events including the Edinburgh International Children's Festival Opening Weekend in 2017. This Adelaide Fringe will be the first time the work has been performed in Australia and is a great opportunity to share and develop this work in front of new audience. I'm curious to see how it goes and what Fifi and me can learn from the experience.
Everyone, no matter if you donate one bean or one hundred beans will get a thank you on twitter, my website and in my printed programme.
Budget Overview
The Fringe can be quite an expensive affair. Outwith my time, travel to and from Adelaide and living costs (which I'm not looking to cover from this campaign) here are some of the costs your beans will help support:
Jelly Beans $110
Fringe Registration: $210
Set and other props (aside from beans) $70
Venue Hire: $900
Marketing (inlcudes online and print) $130
Local transport (of self and set- public transport and a few taxis when required) $80
Extra Beans?
If I make more beans than I need for Adelaide I will use the remaining beans for future development of the show. I plan to make The Bean Counter a beautiful work with high production values, suitable for touring to a variety of venues. To make this happen I need to employ other creatives and technicians, such as a Designer, Sound designer, Dramaturg and Stage Manager. I aspire to make this work more accessible and plan to work with a leading Disabled artist in Scotland to make it suitable for a D/deaf and hard of hearing, audience.
Potential Challenges
Alice and her clown, Fifi, will develop Type 2 Diabetes and clock up large dental bills from the consumption of too many beans.
Adults and children may get too competitive guessing the number of beans.
Adults and children may get saw jaws from smiling too much.
Top Bean
Thank you from the bottom of my bean-ting heart. I will thank you on social media (Twitter, Facebook) and in my printed programme as a Top Bean. If you would prefer to stay mysterious (aka anonymous) please say. If you happen to be in Adelaide during my run, please get in touch and I will do my very best to thank you in person. Fifi, my clown, will send you a personalised thank you postcard (digital) from Adelaide.
