Rosemary BeardOn a rainy evening in Brisbane we headed down to the Brisbane Powerhouse for the much anticipated At Last – The Etta James Story. A narrative performance celebrating the life and music of Etta James. Vicka Bull and her band gave a remarkable performance. The stage was simple with lighting mimicking a nightclub as Vicka strutted, shook her bootie and transported the audience into the troubled life that Etta lived at the edge of the limits. The hauntingly mellow lyrics and feelings of I’d Rather Go Blind brought a reverent quiet over the crowd. The audience was hushed and in awe of the depth of emotion that Vicka put into the song and bathed in the rawness of her voice. During the narrative the crowd was visibly engaged by their comments – surprised at the young age she passed away, saddened by her dementia diagnosis and feeling the pain of the addictions both to love and drugs. The band was tight and played into the show well. If you were unable to see the show live head to .
