PROXIMITY 2014: The Floriographer

If you were to give flowers to someone you cared about, regardless of age, sex or gender, who would it be?
For Proximity Festival 2014 I have been invited to debut a one-on-one live-art experience inside an immersive sensory flower installation, which questions the social conventions of gift giving and floristry. Part consultation, part botanic discovery, this new work references artists such as ‘non-shouting feminist’ Lily van der Stokker, whose work explores ideas that seem to be forbidden in art: the decorative, the sentimental, the ‘ nice’ and ‘ pretty’.
As a floriographer I will use my knowledge of each flower in the installation to create a personalized bouquet of meanings for each audience member. Each day I’ll be preparing a beautiful installation of flowers for audience members to touch, smell and choose from while I create their perfect posey; stocking it with fresh flowers that will fill the historic Fremantle Arts Centre with floral colour and scent.
It will be a beautiful addition to the festival, but buying fresh flowers for over 100 people doesn’t come cheap. This is my first performance work and I need your help to make it happen! I’ve been lucky enough to secure matched funding, meaning every dollar you donate goes twice as far.
Thanks to Creative Partnerships, every dollar you pledge up to $1500 will be matched through their Match Crowdfunding for the Independent Arts Sector initiative, provided I reach my target!
This work will be developed and presented as part of Proximity Festival at Fremantle Arts Centre 22 October – 1 November 2014. Proximity Festival is the first platform in Australia dedicated to the creation and presentation of one-on-one intimate performances. Co-founded by James Berlyn, Sarah Rowbottam and Kelli Mccluskey, Proximity Festival provides critical peer support, encouraging artists from all disciplines to experiment with new modes of practice in the creation of participatory art. www.proximityfestival.com

How The Funds Will Be Used
The budget breakdown:
Fresh flowers from our local supplier: $150 per day for 12 days = $1,800
Twine, buckets, secateurs, glass jars, and other floristry tools: $110
Materials and an install technician's help to create an immersive installation (extra flowers, fishing line, wire, wall decor): $440
Training and guidance from a psychologist, flower essence therapist, florist, and improvisation classes: $650
A huge bouquet of thank-yous for your time and support!
