The music of Philip Glass has long been a passion of mine.  I remember hearing his work back in the 1980s and can still recall the immediate connection I felt.  Many years later, in 2003, I began a journey of giving all-Glass piano recitals which at the time, strange as it may seem, was rare in Australia.  Only when Glass himself made occasional visits to Australia did we hear his piano music played in full-length all-Glass programs, performed by the composer himself.  I continued my passion to promote this rather intimate piano repertoire in further all-Glass concerts from 2006 to 2013 in Newcastle, Brisbane, Sydney and during two tours of Canada in 2008 and 2013.  

After Glass's release of the complete Etudes 1-20 in late 2014, I finally decided it was time from me to record a CD of my approach to this man's music.  For this initial CD (hopefully another recording may follow), I've chosen Book One of the Etudes which represent the first 10 of the complete set.  There will also be two other tracks on the recording; one of the pieces from 'The Hours' and a work I composed in 2012 in homage to Glass to celebrate his 75th birthday year.  



I decided to approach MOVE records in Melbourne and they happily came on board to record and produce the CD of the Glass Etudes 1-10.  MOVE have an impressive history of recording Australian artists and promoting Australian music.  Your assistance in this campaign will not only be assisting me but also supporting an Australian recording company and it's endeavour to continue promoting Australian musicians and music.  


I'm truly delighted to be recording this Philip Glass album on a very fine instrument.  After investigating various possibilities of pianos and venues, I was very excited to be given the opportunity to record on a German, Schimmel K280 concert grand piano. The availability of recording on this beautiful piano became possible through the generosity and support of Bernie Capicchiano, manager of the Bernies Music Land in Melbourne.  

The total cost of this CD recording project has been estimated to cost between approximately $8,000 to $12,000.  An exact figure is not really possible to state due to the flexibility needed for editing process with MOVE after the initial recording 'takes'.

As this is a self-funded project, the funds hopefully raised through this Pozible campaign will greatly assist me to help fund this CD recording of Glass's amazing Etudes.  

The Pozible fundraising will help contribute towards the cost of the following:

MOVE records projected expenses ($6,000 - $8,000)
- Recording time with MOVE records (3 night-time sessions of recording me)
- Recording editing by MOVE
- Recording mastering by MOVE
- CD cover graphics design and liner booklet notes design and formatting
- CD production including CD booklet printing
- CD distribution and marketing

Piano related expenses ($2,200)
- Schimmel K280 concert grand preparation, regulation and tuning over 3 days by concert piano technician, Michael Karlberg

Travel expenses to Melbourne ($1,800)
- Travel and accommodation costs to and from Melbourne for the piano technician, Michael Karlberg  and myself during recording process 

The main 'challenges' that I've encountered with this project have the overall organisation involved and the financial costs associated.  As I've mentioned before, this is a totally self-funded project and in addition, I've also been solely responsible for organising the various logistics to make it possible to happen.  As part of the organisation, I've had to approach various people and coordinate their availability.  I also had to search and find a suitable recording company along with an instrument that would be well suited to me and Glass's amazing Etudes.
