Every family ought to have access to the internet. We are going to help some of those who do not. Many people on the Carlton Housing Estates are excluded from the digital world. Estate Computers are ready and waiting to break down the digital divide, but we need your help.
Why do these families need access to the internet?
We are passionate about digital inclusion. Many everyday tasks now need to be performed on the internet and these families will gain the ability to do things like:
* Connect up with family overseas using Skype or Email
* Pay bills / transfer funds with internet banking
* Fill in Centrelink forms or seek out employment
* Help the kids do their homework
* Perhaps also to have some fun!
Our Target
We aim to raise at least $5,000 to fund five Connecting Up Families Packages for residents on the Carlton Housing Estates. Each package will include
* One refurbished Estate Computers Laptop with a 12 month warranty
* Fully licenced copies of Microsoft Windows 7 and Microsoft Office
* Internet Connection for 12 Months
* Hands on training at the ICAN IT Centre located on the Carlton Estate
* Free child care during the training sessions
* 12 months help desk support from Estate Computers (located at the heart of the Carlton Estate)
* Ongoing participation in a community of practice
Church of All Nations Community Support Agency will manage the nomination process to award these packages using the following criteria:
* Lives on a Carlton Housing Estate
* Holds a current low income health care card
* Does not already own a computer - preference will be given to families who have never owned a computer
* Is willing to participate in the training program and is keen to learn how to use the computer
* Preference will be given to families with primary school aged children
What is an Estate Computer?
Estate Computers are refurbished laptop and desktop computers that have been donated by corporations, universities or government departments. Exact specifications vary but all machines are less than 3 years old and this program is diverting them from landfill as they are replaced with new machines in the workplace. A new hard disk is inserted into each machine and loaded with Microsoft Windows 7, Microsoft Office and several free applications. All Estate Computers are sold with a 12 month warranty.
A typical Estate Computer will come with:
* Mouse and Keyboard
* 19 inch Flat screen monitor
* 80 GB hard disk
* 2 GB memory
* Intel Core 2 processor
The licensing arrangement with Microsoft means that Windows and Office can only be provided to people with low income health care cards. If you do not have a Health Care Card then you can purchase your own copies of windows and office and Estate Computers will install them for you, or you can purchase an Estate Computer for the same price without any Microsoft software and Estate Computers will install open source software including a Linux based operating system and Open Office.
Project Partners
A Social Enterprise which provides the residents of Carlton Housing Estate and surrounding estates in Melbourne and some rural estates refurbish computers with genuine Microsoft Windows 7 and Office software.
Offers a range of community services out of the Uniting Church on the Carlton Estate. The Agency has agreed to underwrite Estate Computers until the social enterprise becomes a viable business in its own right.
Local community house that works in partnership with Estate Computers and Church of All Nations Community Support Agency to deliver training. Training is delivered at the ICAN IT centre located in the Church of All Nations on the Carlton Estate.

Tour of Estate Computers. You will be invited to participate in a tour of Estate Computers in Carlton where you will see the computers as they are being rebuilt. You will also visit the Church of All Nations Community Support Agency and the ICAN IT centre where training will be delivered. Your name will be recorded on the list of project supporters.

This will be a 6th, 7th or 8th family after the 5 initial scholarships are funded when we meet our goal. You will have naming rights on this extra scholarship. 10 Estate Computers This reward level is targeted at individuals or groups who want to help us get computers to even more people. You will be given the chance to nominate a group to distribute the computers to their local community and we will make every effort to deliver the computers to the group you nominate. If this is not possible then we will ask you if these computers can be distributed on the Carlton estate. Your name will be recorded on the list of project supporters.
