Porphyria's Slumber is a premiere collaborative theatrical work, and the debut solo performance of Annabelle McMillan, as part of the Sydney Fringe Festival 2012.

Annabelle McMillian’s playful interaction with a miniature projection of herself on a cardboard diorama is the night’s visual standout.
Teik-Kim Pok, for REALTIME ARTS about BEGUILED

These artists are working to scale and possibility – but always keeping the visual at the forefront – and sometimes you just want to see something beautiful and arresting – pleasurable and intricate – or clever – or funny. And Beguiled has all of these aspects.
Augusta Supple, playwright, about BEGUILED

A few months ago, I went back to my other-home of Jakarta, Indonesia to visit my mum. On the flight back, an idea struck. The next thing I knew, I had registered for the Sydney Fringe Festival, secured a venue, called up the usual collaborative culprits, and had gone too far to turn back.

Life's been pretty interesting since I finished drama school in 2010. Since then, I have stage managed, performed, devised, designed, produced, and had a mostly excellent time both on and off stage.

In 2011, I was accepted into a residency as part of the PACT Ensemble, and with this small group of young creatives, we brainstormed, experimented and workshopped a new devised show, Beguiled. I felt on the right path to establishing my artistic practice, and prepared to step out on my own.

About the show

"Perfectly pure and good: I found

A thing to do, and all her hair

In one long yellow string I wound

Three times her little throat around,

And strangled her..."

Porphyria wakes to find herself in a timeless, placeless abyss, with objects and people she does not recognise. There is a strange machine with one button, books that speak, and thousand of young women who have stolen her identity. Here, she can play, explore, learn...and perhaps, remember what it is that she's forgotten...

Combining film, physical theatre, shadow puppetry and social media, the devised debut of Annabelle McMillan is whimisical, violent, and always surprising.

How you can help!
As an emerging theatre artist, my work thus far has been self-funded. On smaller projects, this has been feasible, but for a larger-scale production, this is proving to make it next to impossible for me to pay my rent, let alone eat decent, nourishing meals! The biggest costs for this production are venue hire, set and technology hire, printing flyers, and marketing costs. Any amount that you donate makes a difference in supporting new theatre in Australia. And if you don't have two coins to rub together, but you have access to a smart phone, computer or even a piece of chalk, I'd love it if you could share my project with others.

Thank you, a million times over. x
