Arts Residency, Ireland
ABOUT ME
Hi, my name is Annie Edney, and I'm a Melbourne-based artist working with video, exploring our human relationship with the
planet via ancestral memory and genealogy.

I have over 20 years experience as director and lead artist making large-scale site-specific community celebration projects, however I am now focussing on my solo practice of video art.
Emerging as a video artist in 2015, I currently have two videos showing in Venice, I had one in Istanbul Design Biennial in 2016, in Mars Gallery’s Melbourne Art Loop 2015 & 2017 and I have work in the Gertrude Street Projection Festival 21-30 July 2017.
And now an amazing opportunity has come to do an arts residency at the Burren College of Art in Ireland where video making and projection mapping will be the focus of my research and experimentation.

ABOUT THE PROJECT
It feels as if I've been offered the chance of a lifetime - an arts residency at the Burren College of Art in Ireland! It's a prestigious place of arts learning in Europe, with a particular focus on contemporary design, and the process of applying for a residency is rigorous, so I am really honoured to have been invited.

Burren College of Arts
The residency offers 24/7 access to a studio, facilities like photography studios, printing facilities and equipment, I get to talk regularly with faculty staff, have accommodation at the College, I can attend lectures, talks, exhibitions and events ... all in the evocative historic castle that houses the Burren College of Art, set in the hauntingly beautiful Burren landscape.
I expect to be ridiculously inspired!

My current conceptual direction, within the overarching theme of our human relationship with earth energy, is about the memories of all our ancestors that we hold in our DNA. Can we learn to access those memories from across the ages? Can I make work that evokes those memories? What happens to my work when I walk the land my ancestors walked while reflecting on ancestral memory and genealogy? When I read into that particular branch of epigenetics?

The main focus of the residency will be learning and becoming familiar with the Projection Mapping program, making new videos that incorporate imagery from the Burren and trialling the use of these in the Projection Mapping program. I will come away from the residency with increased skill levels and a consolidated body of work, ready to embark on an exciting collaboration with Ian Corcoran, a projections genius I met recently. We have both expressed an inclination to make a project together. Watch out!
You can see Ireland is the best place for me to take time and do some research and experimentation. It will provide a time for reflection about the development of my career, following 25 plus years of a community engaged practice, into the video art of my solo practice. I will continue my daily drawing practice and some of those drawings will become rewards for those who pledge to my campaign.

Your support for my residency at the Burren College of Art in Ireland, will enable me to research and experiment with video making, projection mapping and installation. And it will ensure that the next stage of my art life will be as magnificent as it can be, making a meaningful contribution to Australia's artworld.
