WRECKING BALL is a 8 x1 hour television drama series which delves head on into the high octane world of pro bull riding.
“The emergence of crowd funding is a real boost for the film making community, not only in terms of lowering the pressure on limited Government resources, but it also gives filmmakers like us the opportunity to develop a TV series without the requisite pre-sales to Networks so early in the process.
It gives us the chance to engage directly with our audience so that we can develop a TV series that people want to see. It eliminates the need for Networks to second-guess what the general public want from their television, and enables us to be bolder and more confident in our approach to storytelling.
Shows like Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones and The Sopranos would never have left the pitching room in Australia before being diluted to placate certain demographics. In the modern world, more and more, the younger demographic are seeking television programming on DVD and through alternative broadcasters such as itunes, Apple TV and online, where they can find a more diverse and exciting range of TV shows that don’t pander to the requirements of myopic television broadcasters.
To be truly global we need look to the future of broadcasting, which may not necessarily follow the archaic and wholly traditional domestic avenues of distribution. The cottage film and TV approach to Australian content and development won’t see us being part of the distribution revolution, unless we start to look at the world stage as a starting point. SYNOPSIS
WRECKING BALL is a 8 x1 hour television drama series which delves head on into the high octane world of pro bull riding.
A gambler, fighter, boozer and all round wrecking ball, Ex- World Champion, Jack Young crashes through life like he rides bulls, leaving a trail of broken relationships behind him. Now, at the end of his career, at 35 years old his body is battered and bruised and it is time to retire.
But with the news that his son has contracted a rare and life threatening blood disease, Jack is forced unwillingly back into the sport that has destroyed him over the years. With age and his 'has been' status preventing him from garnering much needed lucrative sponsorship in the corporate arena, Jack must do it the hard way and ride himself into the big dollars to help his son.
Jack is given one last chance to climb from number 100 in the world back up to his former world championship glory, only problem is his body isn't capable of living up to his aspirations. Jack enlists the help of a doctor who supplies him with a concoction of morphine and testosterone to keep him riding and in touch with the championship, but his association turns dangerous when it is revealed the doctor is involved in match fixing and illegal gambling.
What started out as a personal crusade to provide medical care for his son, quickly turns into a dark and dangerous journey into corporate corruption, match fixing and greed as Jack is tempted once again by glory, money, notoriety and fame.
Wrecking Ball is a television series about dreams, hardships, love, greed, and the pursuit of glory, even if it kills you.
Breaking Bad meets The Wrestler in this bold new series.
