Red Line: A solo exhibition
Red Line is my first exhibition at Chinchilla White Gums Regional Gallery, QLD in conjunction with the Art@Kogan festival October 2012. I will be producing around 14 to 20 new works on canvas of various sizes which will be exhibited for four weeks.
My funding goal is $1600. It is a modest amount to assist in covering materials costs, including stretchers, canvas, paint and other items from Fitzroy Stretches, Melbourne. As appreciation of support I will reward my contributors with a selection of artworks from signed original drawings, to pastels and oil paintings.
I have been a practicing artist all my adult life, I studied at Sydney College of the Arts and Victoria College of Arts and Music Melbourne and I am currently based in Daylesford Victoria. In the past four years I have worked closely with community groups in regional Queensland including two exhibitions and a residency at the Stockman's Hall of Fame, Longreach, judging the Hugh Sawrey Art Award at Kogan QLD in 2009 and conducting mural workshops with local children for which I received a Queensland Regional Development Grant. I have personal folio site on which I have maintained documentation of all the work I have produced in the last two decades which can be viewed at http://www.sawrey.com.au
I am fascinated by the presence of Australian landscape in painting and the role it plays in the psychological and social character of those who occupy and pass through it. I see not an environment fixed in time and place but a dynamic entity in flux and movement; an environment of contesting ideas characterized as much by speed, lines of communication, industry and commerce as it is by history, blood, sweat, and memory. I do not see the landscape exclusively as a repository of tradition and myth but a background to change and transition and I have explored these themes in numerous exhibitions. I have found that the most profound responses to my interests has been from those shows in regional areas and It is my aim to produce a show of similar power for the patrons or White Gums Regional Gallery.
