Hi,
My name is Arie Rain Glorie and I am an artist and curator based in Melbourne. I am raising money for my fourth major independent project 'Carousel'. Since 2012 I have created over seven self-funded independent curatorial projects, including 3 festivals (The Love/City Curatorial Trilogy), and a range of experimental exhibition forms, that have engaged over 95 local and international artist. 'Carousel' is my most ambitious idea yet which relies on some heavy equipment hire- this time I am asking for some help.
With all my work- from independent projects to working with festivals (this years I am the Assistant Curator, Gertude Street Projection Festival)- I am interested in making creative disruptures that continue the important conversation about alternative ways in which artists can engage audiences with art. I believe this is an important conversation when we are increasingly competing for peoples attenation against the demands of modern life (and commodified time).
This practice-led-research has formed the idea of 'Carousel', which picks up on Hans Ulrich Obrist's idea about time-based exhibitions. After obversiving the differences between how audiences engage with theatre in contrast to how people behave in galleries and museums I want to ask; what happens when visual art behaves like a performance? How does sitting down and viewing visual art in a concentrated allotment of time change our experiences of it?
With this in mind Carousel proposes a revision of the exhibition form by putting contemporary artworks in motion. Using a stage revolve it exhibits the artworks to a seated audience one by one. It expands the way in which visual art has historically been understood without the exhaustion and anxiety of visiting large scale exhibitions in museums and galleries.
This project will engage over 50 emerging and established artists from Melbourne's visuala arts community over three nights at the historic Industrial School at the Abbotsfor Convent as a part of Melbourne Fringe Festival 2016.
How The Funds Will Be Used
The funds raised in this campaigne will go towards the purchase of the hire of a stage revolve which costs over $2,400. This idea rely's heavily on this piece of equipment, which will ensure that the artworks genorously donated to this exhibition are exhibited in the best possible condition, without interference, with the upmost integrity. Using a stage revolve eliminates the need to have performers presenting the artworks in the exhibition . Removing performers ensures the Carousel is experienced as an art exhibtion that has the temporal character of theatre and not theatre than involves art.
It will also go towards some of the production costs of exhibiting over 50 artists (communtication, documentation, catalogu design and printing, install and de-install materials and more). The money raised as part of this campagne only covers a small portion of this cost. The rest will be sourced through in-kind support and some fundraising.
The Challenges
This project is challenging in its unsual form. Visual art exhibitions more often deal with space rather than time. To run an exhibition like a theatre show presents logistical problems as well as conceptual ones. Now the curator has to think temporally rather than spatially.
The biggest challenge in ensuring the success of this project will be ensuring that the exhibition runs smoothly and without interruption each night so that the audiences can be in a concenrated art moment. Once again, the stage revolve becomes a very important piece of equipment in achieving this. We are hiring one from a professional stage produciotn company. It is not a make-shift piece of equipment.
I have a production team and a team of curators on board who are able to problem solve anything with creative thinking.
