Schmidt first took shape as part of a playwriting mentorship with Nicki Bloom (Land and Sea, Little Bird, Tender) through ATYP's Fresh Ink Programme. From Lochy's noodle came some nonsense and that nonsense became what will be Back Porch Theatre's debut show.
Back Porch Theatre is an Adelaide-based independent theatre company dedicated to producing new work utilising local talent. The entire creative team behind Schmidt is homegrown. We offer a platform for South Australian playwrights, directors, performers, devisors and techs to produce exciting new work whilst simultaneously fostering a strong theatre community in the independent sector. Back Porch is by artists, for artists and we need your support! You; our audiences, colleagues and friends are the pillars of the Porch.
How The Funds Will Be Used
- Rehearsal space hire (Format)
- Venue hire (Bakehouse Theatre)
- Public Liability Insurance (Duck for Cover)
- Materials and equipment hire
Producing theatre is a gargantuan task and anything you can spare to help us out would be greatly appreciated!
The Challenges
- Sarah Dunn (director)
- Antoine Jelk (actor)
- Suzannah Kennet Lister (actor)
- Ashton Malcolm (actor)
- Rebecca Mayo (actor)
- James Smith (actor)
- Callan Fleming (sound design)
- Matthew Gregan (composer)
- Haneen Martin (stage design/promotion)
- Alexander Ramsay (lighting design)
- Fairygloss (graphic design)
Between them, these artists have worked with some of Australia's premiere theatre companies including; State Theatre Company of South Australia, Brink Productions, Slingsby, Windmill Theatre, Patch Theatre Company, Vitalstatistix, Sydney Theatre Company, Playwriting Australia and many more. This is a tight crew and we can't imagine anyone better for the job.
There are, of course, fiscal challenges to be overcome when producing theatre, including (but not limited to):
- Artist wages
- Venue hire
- Rehearsal space hire
- Public Liability Insurance
- Equipment/materials
- Promotion and marketing
- Costumes/props/make-up
- Printing costs
In order to secure funding for these various necessities, Back Porch will, in conjunction with this Pozible campaign, be hosting a Schmidt Party on Feb 6th. This is a FUNdraising event (forgive the abysmal pun) in which the proceeds will go toward the various expenses listed above. We will also be applying to various grant bodies in order to secure their support, as well as other miscellaneous fundraising drives.
Another challenge lies in the fact that we are a fledgling company and as such, a strong marketing campaign will be crucial if Schmidt is to succeed. To give us a leading edge, Back Porch has hired local curator/visual artist/events manager Zombie Queen (Haneen Martin) to spearhead the promotion.
