"Closet Land: The Stage Play" by Radha Bharadwaj
"Closet Land: The Stage Play" will be staged for the first time in Australia at The Bakehouse Theatre, Adelaide from the 27th to the 30th of November. This production will be directed by Olivia Jane Parker, and stars Melissa Rayner.
Based upon the 1991 film of the same name, "Closet Land" is set some time in the not too distant future, in an unnamed country, ruled over by a totalitarian government. The protagonist is an author of children's books (played by Madeleine Stowe in the original film), whose latest work, "Closet Land", is a novel about a child who is locked in a closet by her abusive mother, whereupon the clothes magically come to life and befriend her. The Author is arrested by the government under suspicion that her latest work is a subversive allegory for the struggles of the resistance movement. Dragged from her bed in the middle of the night, she is taken to a holding cell and denied access to legal representation. She is then interrogated by a mysterious government official (originally played by Alan Rickman). A gripping and suspenseful battle of wits ensues, in which The Interrogator attempts to coerce The Author into signing a confession to sedition. But she refuses to compromise her principles, drawing upon the power of imagination to find the courage to resist.
A powerful testament to the courage of resistance, and the power of imagination, "Closet Land" is an important play whose central themes of government censorship, political torture and abuse of power in both the domestic and social spheres, are as relevant to today's world as they were when the film was originally made. It is also a suspenseful psychological thriller and a touching personal drama of awakening conscience.
