I have been invited by INSTINC (http://www.instinc.com/) in Singapore to be an artist in residence for the month of July, 2012. This will be my first international residency where I will create work in my own studio and work towards a solo exhibition in early August.
I would like to immerse myself in a new culture and work alongside other artists to develop a reflective and engaging body of work which I will share with others through my blog and in future exhibitions. I would also like to contribute my ideas, artistic perspective and enthusiasm for community whilst learning from other artists and gaining inspiration from the natural environment.
‘An open Invitation’
Using a mixture of collage, drawing, paint, installation and craft I will explore the relationship between materiality and identity in a foreign environment. I aim to express a personal dialogue that questions my position amongst the unfamiliar.
The Hybrid forms and landscapes created from my immediate environment will be used to build new pictorial spaces and playful dream-like realities. My works will flow down the walls and across the gallery space, and delve into ideas of desire, home and identity.
The creation of personal symbols and patterns will reconstruct my emotional and physical movements through new and foreign environments, and evoke my impressions of experiencing them. I intend to work with found materials and transform them to create works that physically cross the threshold of the gallery environment, connecting out into the streets.
I am interested in the accessibility of art to all and I would like my works to extend an invitation with paper and craft elements creeping underneath the gallery doors and encountering passers by.
I will create an original postcard sized artwork for you.
