The 1 Million Tree Project
When was the last time you felt hopeful about the environment? The current stress on our natural world is unprecedented and the bad news seems to increase daily. But we want to give people hope that we can help reverse some of the damage done to the bush.
Bush Heritage Australia is an independent not-for-profit organisation that buys and manages land for conservation, and also partners with Aboriginal groups and other land owners for the greatest impact.
We have an enormous opportunity in front of us – a chance to take action and feel hopeful again. A massive project is underway to plant a million trees and shrubs in the red soils at our Eurardy Reserve, on Nanda country, about 6 hours' drive north of Perth. Here we’re taking on the largest restoration project in our 28-year history.
Ben and Tina live full time at Eurardy with their one year old son Liam and are overseeing this project. They are super passionate, hard working and 100% dedicated to making this project a success. Hear from them directly about the work they're doing at Eurardy and how this project works.
Bush Heritage bought Eurardy in 2005. It's 33,000 hectares and around 10% of the property had been cleared for pastoral use. This image shows the intact bushland to the left, and the cleared land ready for replanting on the right.
Over 36,000 native seedlings have been planted as part of the first phase of a project that will eventually cover over 1,350 hectares (imagine 762 Melbourne Cricket Grounds back to back).
We’ve been able to get started thanks to a partnership with Perth’s Carbon Neutral Charitable Fund. But putting the plants in the ground is just the first step. We need your generous support to give the new seedlings the best chance of survival in the months and years ahead.
If we can see them through until fully grown, this new vegetation will offset at least 90,000 tonnes of carbon – the equivalent of taking more than 21,000 cars off the road each year.
This mammoth task will help re-establish York gum (Eucalyptus loxophleba) woodlands and melaleuca, helping provide habitat for species in decline such as the Red-tailed Black Cockatoo and vulnerable Malleefowl.
Our long-term vision over the next 5 to 10 years is to also revegetate Eurardy's cleared Kwongan Heathland; a globally significant and threatened ecosystem and it’s here where you have the power to make a tangible impact.
Budget Overview
Through partnerships and other fundraising we've already been able to make a good start. But it costs around $2,500 to carefully restore 1 hectare of cleared bushland, addressing both habitat loss and climate change.
Kwongan Heathland has a super diversity of species, as this short video explains. https://youtu.be/mWVATekt4ZA
Rest assured, we've successfully revegetated similar landscapes on our Monjebup Reserves in south-west WA. Everything we do is informed by science – we employ a large team of ecologists and researchers as well as experienced land managers.
Now we just need your support. Our goal for this Pozible Campaign is to raise $12,500 to help revegetate 5 hectares of bush across our Western Australian reserves.
