Canberra Urban Honey
WE DID IT
- This project is the first crowd funded urban agriculture project in Australia - well done everybody! And THANK YOU
All future information will now appear on the project blog at:

I am a 3rd generation beekeeper with a vision to share the fascinating world of bees and honey with other people. My vision for the Canberra Urban Honey Project is explained in our video at:
I grew up in a family of commercial beekeepers and am passionate about sharing the joy of beekeeping and honey. Many say I "have bees in my genes". The link below will take you to a radio interview I did with 666ABC Canberra.

Bees are a critical part of our eco-system. I'm hoping you will help me to bring bees into the city of Canberra, to establish micro-apiaries on the flat-top roof spaces of multi-story buildings.
When people learn of my beekeeping heritage they often ask: "Why don't we see bees like we used to?" People who have backyard vegetable gardens or fruit trees say things like: "I don't get as many apples as I used to years ago." or "I didn't have many strawberries, I didn't see any bees on them". It's quite remarkable to me. Many people recognise, over recent years, there has been a change in their home produce. They usually understand that the declining numbers of bees in our city means less pollination for their backyard vegetable gardens and fruit trees.
I've listened to people ask about and comment on the lack of bees in our city and thought I could do something about it. This project is a way to answer a call that seems to be coming from the community to have more bees in the city and also share my love of bees and honey.
How I want to do it
I've kept bees in the surburbs of Canberra for some time and with the support of the Canberra community could expand to develop micro-apiaries throughout the city. My plan is to move bees from the country to the city.
My extended family are commercial beekeepers and I have convinced them to donate their best hives to the project. You can find more information about me and my family at:
*our website - http://honeydelight.com.au/Honey_Delight/Home.html or
*our facebook pages - http://www.facebook.com/HoneyDelightCanberra

I just need buildings with flat roof spaces as sites for micro-apiaries (4 hives) and people with an appreciation of sustainable food production and gardening.
My extended family have offered support with beekeeping equipment and new queens, if needed. I have even convinced my parents to give me more of my grandfathers precious bee boxes.
How can you help?
You can help in lots of ways. :-)
*Do you have a building with a flat roof? I am asking people who own multi-story buildings with flat roofs to work in partnership with me, by donating their roof space to the project, so I can establish a micro-apiary. It is important that the roof space is accessible by a stairwell.
*Would you like to support the project? The money you donate will go toward:
-the cost of moving bees from the country to the city;
-developing a blog to keep you, and hopefully many more people, informed about the progress of the Canberra Urban Honey Project; and
-if additional funds are available, purchase of additional beekeeping or honey storage equipment.
Give the project buzz!
Spread the honey love!
Have a hive mind!
