Air Jelly by FESTO , in general is a type of mechanical system which utilizes vertical propulsion in air, mimicking the way a jelly fish glides in water. A jelly fish glides in water by taking in water from the environment, storing it in its bell-shaped body and expelling it outwards. This sequence of motion will produce a forward thrust which propels the jelly fish forward, similar to a jet propulsion system in air planes. The images below shows an expansion and contraction sequence of a jelly fish.
Thus,  Taylor's University Engineering Students were inspired by FESTO's Air Jelly to create our own version of the Air Jelly. Every group will create their individual Air Jelly, whereby the project will span a total duration of 8 months starting from March 2015. By the end of December 2015, every group will pit their Air Jelly in a race, whereby the group with the fastest time taken for the Air Jelly to hover to 10 meters and back, wins. The main concept of our Air Jelly was that it must incorporate a vertical propulsion system. The vertical propulsion system can either mimic FESTO Air Jelly, which is using the Fin Ray Effect , or we mimic a helicopter propulsion which also provides vertical lift.

Thus, we decided that our Air Jelly would best benefit by using the helicopter propulsion system because this method is more direct and doesn't require the use of the tentacles. Our propulsion system is direct, by using a high powered brushless motor to displace air underneath.. Coupled with the buoyancy force provided by the helium filled balloon,  our Air Jelly still fulfills the vertical propulsion requirement, but with a twist. The picture below shows the final product in CAD format which will be the end product of our Air Jelly.

Project Goals

The intention of this crowd funding campaign is to obtain funds to give a financial support for our project in the next few months .For this, we have allocated a total of RM 1500 for the total budget that is to be pledged. However, due to the requirement of our project budget, we only allow to use RM 1000 so that we move our purpose of this campaign to collect fund for the rewards instead. The funds that were pledged in supporting our Air Jelly campaign, will be used for each selected rewards, depending on the amount pledged. This is our way of expressing our gratitude for supporting both our Air Jelly project, as well as our crowd fund campaign.

TIme Management

As engineering students, we have numerous assignments, test and lab reports that is needed to be completed in the given period of time. Therefore, the challenge is to manage our time well, such that we have enough time to manufacture the Air Jelly without compromising our assignments.
