Did you know Australia still permits the use of many colours and preservatives that have been banned overseas because of their health risks? At least 30 of the additives permitted in Australia are known or suspected to cause cancer and many more are linked to asthma, behaviour problems, hyperactivity and skin irritation. Yet we are still unknowingly feeding them to our children!
If you are as outraged by this as I am, help me bring to life a new app which makes it easy to avoid these additives and harnesses people power to send a clear message to food manufacturers.
The Additive Detective App scans the barcode of a product, alerts the user to any harmful additives in the product and suggests other brands or products that are additive free. It has the potential to influence the buying behaviour of thousands of people Australia wide, hitting food manufacturers right where it counts - in their bottom line.
Funding for The Additive Detective App will be used to engage Ingenius Labs, an innovative mobile app developer in Perth, to create the app, plus employ data collection and entry personnel to build the initial database of 20,000 products.
