'An Ode to My Denim Jacket' is an upcoming 2020 Swinburne University student film.
After nagging her parents to buy an expensive Denim Jacket, fourteen-year-old Aaliyah soon witnesses the burden she has placed on her hard-working, filo immigrant parents.
Wanting to give Aaliyah a better life in Australia, her parents give in despite the urgency of rent and family obligations. However, things start to take a turn for the worst; meals get smaller and her parents desperately hide their struggles from doing overtime. One night, Aaliyah's dad comes home late and mum nearly collapses, leaving Aaliyah to witness everything through the crack of her door. After this, Aaliyah starts being sensitive to her parents, noticing their sacrifices and body aches. She decides to confront her parents, ending the night with a family hug but the reassurance from her parents that in a week’s time they'll be back to normal. This doesn't convince Aaliyah, but further convicts her to save her family despite the risk of being excluded from her friends. In the end, she sells her jacket, reading a poem called ' An Ode to My Denim Jacket' before saying goodbye.
Told in the style of a 1980's teen rom-com, 'An Ode to My Denim Jacket' gives insight into the imigrant experience and its implications on faith and family connections.
