I'm trying to make it to this year's Stanley Awards in Newcastle. For those of you who might not have heard of the Stanleys, they are like the Oscars but for Australian cartoonists. Kind of. Billy Crystal won't be there. But Sam Viviano, the art director for MAD Magazine will be there and that really is a close second. There's also a lot of little handy workshops to attend and everybody's always drawing and I hear the walls are made out of candy.

You might be asking why I need money to get there. Oddly enough, the answer to that question is the same as the reason why I want to go: I am a cartoonist. And despite having a regular weekly cartoon published in The Mercury, I don't make much money. I definitely don't make enough to just willy-nilly jet off to the mainland (I live in Tasmania) to go to a two day conference specifically for cartoonists held in the Hotel Catch-22.

Oh, we cartoonists are a sad lot, but we also like to help each other out. We give each other advice, share inking techniques and sometimes gather around to collectively marvel at the latest WACOM something-or-other. We invigorate and learn from each other. And we build each other up. That's why the collective noun for a group of cartoonists is a "crosshatch."

I need to raise enough money to buy the return plane tickets to Sydney, the train tickets to Newcastle, the taxi fare to the hotel - I need to pay for that as well. The Stanely's themselves cost money, too. As does eating.

So, how can you help me? Well on your right, there are a few donation options. For each amount, you can get zines, original artwork or a heartfelt thank you postcard from Newcastle that I'll draw a little something on. I've included a few examples of my cartooning work, but if you want to see more, you can always check out my website.

I know a cartoonist get-together might seem like an odd thing to help a guy out with, but it really does mean a lot to me to be able to meet some of my cartooning heroes from around the country. I might just throw up.

Special thanks to Duncan Robinson for doing the voiceover for my commercial. Also, a big thank you to Gary Rhodes and David Blumenstein, who gave me essential advice on the more technical details that I would have overlooked. But the biggest THANK YOU goes to my ever-patient wife who has watched every stage of this ad so many times (and given great feedback) that she probably never wants to see it ever again. All the footage and music (including Advance Australia Fair) is public domain.

I will send you a thank-you postcard from glorious Newcastle, Australia. I'll even do a little drawing on it.

I don't really expect anyone other than super-rich mining magnates to want this option.

So if you're out there and you choose this, I will draw, ink and watercolour a parliamentary dinosaur on A3 paper. I'll even let you pick the dinosaur.

And if you actually happen to be a mining billionaire, I will also promise to not make fun of you in my political cartoons for a least a week. After that, it's no-holds barred. (Nothing personal, just business.)
