Hey, everyone! My name is Christopher Quyen. For those of you who don't know me, I'm a young writer from Sydney, Australia, who likes to belt Billy Joel ironically until I begin to take myself seriously and that is when the magic happens - or at least what I like to tell myself. I also dwell in music, photography, acting, and filmmaking in my spare time. Anyway, onto my novel below.

Failing art student, Calvin Zephoria, is waiting for something to happen; he has been waiting for twenty years. When Alaina Keats, the girl from the Midnight Sonata, stumbles momentarily into his life, Calvin is inspired into the world of artists and their obsession for perfection and originality. As Calvin delves deeper into this world, he begins to find himself in the midst of a mystery where he will discover just how far someone will go to reach the pinnacle of perfection.

"With Watercolours" is my debut novel and its contents are very dear to me. What you are about to read is not just something that I wrote for myself, but something I wrote for those who feel inadequate, unoriginal, and imperfect - especially artists. I don't want to spoil the contents of the story, but I will give you a small extract from the novel:

"Never before had I seen such subtle beauty in a woman that most men would never notice. It was the heaven in her hello, the splendour in her smile. The way that she would spend each minute mulling over some thought with her pen pressed to her notebook until the steam that hovered above her tea cup caressed itself into Earl Grey’s bathtub. She always wore the same expression on her face as if she knew exactly how many breaths she would take in her life and was counting each and every one. Focused, driven, motivated – everything that I wanted to be. The control she seemed to have over her life scared me. For as long as I had lived I have believed in a greater being that determined the course of my life; perhaps I was scared that if I came to control my own life for a moment then maybe I would decide that the world was a horrible place and it seemed like a good time for a permanent vacation.

I was a living flaw. She was suicide perfect."
