Room to Learn: Building the Future of Chumkriel School

Chumkriel Supporters is a small Australian charity that supports the Chumkriel Language School (CLS) in Kampot in Southern Cambodia.
 Guided by “a hand-up rather than a hand-out” philosophy, CLS offers totally free high quality education to girls and boys both in English and in Khmer, and 100% of every dollar donated goes directly to the school.

We are supported by private Australian and overseas donors, and also work closely with Rotary Australia. Rotary clubs funded and built the initial Language School building, and continue as major supporters.

What’s different? 

Skilled and dedicated local staff teach mostly in English: teaching Maths, English, Computer Studies, Health & Hygiene, and growing vegetables. Studying English has proven to offer much better opportunities for jobs and further study and many former students have gone on to tertiary education—a few have since graduated from university.

“When children arrive early but classrooms are already full, the desire to learn is clear. What’s missing isn’t motivation—it’s space.” Nget Sothy ('Mr Tee'), Founder and Principal of CLS.

At the recent 20th anniversary celebrations in November 2025, students who have graduated and then gone on to university qualified professions told the audience about just how important CLS has been to their success. “CLS doesn't only teach English -it changes lives," said Sreypich, a CLS graduate, now in her 4th year Pharmacy at the University of Health Sciences, Phnom Penh.

Chumkriel Supporters is registered and fully compliant with the Australian Charities and Not-For-Profit Corporation (ACNC). There are no administration costs and all board members and advisors give their time pro-bono.

Chumkriel Language School has reached a pivotal moment, we need 'Room to Learn'!

Enrolment is growing, classrooms are full, and demand from the Chumkriel community continues to rise. We are only able to function by improvising using covered outside areas classrooms.

To ensure the future of Chumkriel School we are raising funds to purchase the block of land adjacent to the current school. This will enable the construction of two new classrooms, which will be light, well ventilated and with modern equipment that can serve generations of Chumkriel children.

This campaign invites supporters to imagine:

• Children learning in safe, modern, bright classrooms
• Teachers with room to teach effectively
• A community gathering around a school built for the future

By purchasing this land, Chumkriel Supporters will help create these new classrooms. CLS will be able to offer expanded language and cultural programs and have a space for community gatherings and teacher development.
