A chef in a former life, injury has prevented David from returning to the kitchen after the accident that killed his wife. The combination of poverty and loss has exaggerated his tendencies towards control, and under the cover of faith he steadily isolates his son Adam and young daughter Elli to save them from "the Devil's influence". Set in the Great Dividing Ranges of Victoria in the 1990s, Ascension is the unforgiving story of a Walkman, a roast, and a woodshed, and of a father trying to raise his children in the light of God while inadvertently driving them to the darkness.
Visually and aurally, we want to create a suffocating, meditative and sparse world for the film, intense in its cold beauty. Ascension will be realised across a stark colour palette of slate blues, forest greens, chocolate browns, whites and greys, occasionally joined by flickers of deep red. We'll sculpt a tonally rich and textured yet cold and monastic world shown through unexpected framing choices and strong sound design. The interplay of light and shadow will play a huge role.

Claire K. Marsh is an award-winning writer and director currently completing her Masters in Narrative Directing for Film and Television at the Victorian College of the Arts. Her last short William Watched The Horses Burn (2014) was selected to be featured in this year’s edition of Cinewomen, and was also shortlisted for the French film festival One Film, One Country and the Florida-based film festival Startfest.
A custom-built producing machine with a few years' professional experience under her belt, Emma is passionate about facilitating exciting new creative work with care and enthusiasm. Her affection for paperwork is a little concerning.
How The Funds Will Be Used
