YIRRKALA PROJECT 2012

So Tammy and I are off to Yirrkala in North Eastern Arnhem Land and we need your help.

Yirrkala 2012 will be an incredible project and we are so excited to be presenting it to you. Over the four weeks we are there we will work at the Yirrkala Community School. With a total enrolment of 208 students you can imagine this is a very small and tight knit community, so we are really looking forward to spending time getting to know them and creating an amazing collection of artworks.

Using predominately recycled materials we will be creating a series of large scale (portable) collages and murals which will be inspired by stories told by the students of what their community means to them and what it is like growing up there. Each mural will be accompanied with the stories written in both English and the storyteller’s traditional language (were possible).

"Magical Winter Garden" - a recycled collage for Winter in Banyule Festival 2010

Along with the murals, temporary recycled sculptures, installations and ephemeral land art will be created and we will be showing the kids how to create stop animations as well as creating videos to keep our pozible supporters updated on how we are going. Tammy will not only be working as my assistant but also filming and photographing the project which will form our Yirrkala Project 2012 Video (to be screened at our Melbourne Flash night)

"The Sea Dragon" created from recycled materials at Cubbies Adventure Playground 2010

Guided by the teachers and the students as we create each work we will be talking about the importance of recycling and encouraging the kids to explore their imaginations and invite their parents and the wider community to join us.

OUR AWESOME FLASH NIGHTS

To celebrate this project we will create two amazing flash nights, the first will held at Yirrkala to share the works created with the community and to say thank you for allowing us to work with them.

Our second flash night will held in Melbourne at an amazing venue (at this stage our location is quite secret but don’t worry it will be announced closer to the date). A special preview of our Yirrkala Documentary will launch our Flash night (prior to general public admission) for our $25 plus supporters along with a short artists talk by me. Tammy of course will also be there and we hope to meet as many of you as possible as we enjoy a glass of wine and selection of delicious canapes, view the works created by the Yirrkala Community and share our stories.

OUR ONGOING EXCHANGE PROGRAM

During our Melbourne Flash night we will also be creating a giant collage which all are invited to help add to. This we will be sending up to Yirrkala along with their original artworks to say thank you and continue on our idea of the exchange program of stories and artworks between the Yirrkala Community and Melbourne.

The first stage of our exchange program will begin at Cubbies, Fitzroy Adventure Playground (the backyard for the Atherton Gardens Housing Estate) where I will be creating a series of small artworks with the children from Cubbies to present to the community upon arrival to introduce our work and set up a dialogue between the children from these two very different communities.

"Recycled Fence Art Project" Cubbies Adventure Playground 2010

The long term goal is to produce a series of beautiful artist's books allowing for an exchange of stories between these two communities which will include artworks and video encouraging the development of a strong friendship and learning experience for all involved.

SO WHO ARE WE

ALL ABOUT CLARE

Originally from Sydney Clare has worked on Community Art Projects in Australia, England and Ireland including curating exhibitions for World Voices at Royal Festival Hall in London and the Art Trail for Mallow Homes and Gardens Festival (the largest of its kind in London) in 2001.

Relocating to Melbourne in 2007 straight from running her first recycled art project at Woodford Folk Festival it wasn’t long before Clare was asked to run the “My St Kilda” mural program at St Kilda Adventure Playground and so it all began.

In 2008 Clare completed the NEISS program which allowed her to combine her love of art and community with her passion for the environment to create Visual Feast Creations.

During the past 5 years Visual Feast Creations has built a strong portfolio working on a wide variety of community based projects for festivals, schools, corporations, councils and community organisations including:

· Ceres School Incursion Programs
· Fitzroy Adventure Playground
· Skinners Adventure Playground
· St Kilda Adventure Playground
· Moonee Valley Festival
· St Kilda Festival
· Fun 4 Kids
· Stringybark Festival
· Ikea Community Fence Arts Project
· Moreland City Council
· Warrnambool City Council
