Careship Coorong will establish a commercial free-range snail farm in Coonalpyn as part of a community-operated social care farm. The snail farm will provide social care for people with dementia. The snail farm will have a full capacity of 50,000 snails per season which will provide income to fund the social care.
Social care farming is the therapeutic use of farming practices in order to give people with care needs a role that is valued within the community. The snail farm will create meaningful activities for people with care needs while at the same time providing relief for carers and existing care organisations. Care clients or farm helpers will assist with the care and breeding of snails, the purging process, processing and sale of snails. The farm is operated by the community because it will bring people together and create extra support networks for people who are socially isolated and therefore at a higher risk of developing dementia.
Our clients need a shelter when they come to the farm. We therefore need your help to complete the 'Comfort Yurt' project! The 'Comfort Yurt' project will restore a second-hand 10 meter yurt to its old glory so that it is a safe and dry place for the clients to have a break from their activities.
Why?
Currently there are not many services for people with dementia in rural areas. Most people with dementia end up in nursing homes, even those with younger-onset dementia. Most people diagnosed with dementia become restless because they are still able-bodied. Moreover, they have a lot of skills and knowledge to pass on. Although many of their cognitive skills decline, they don’t want to be labeled as ‘empty shells’ and have a wealth to contribute to the community if they are given a chance.

Who will benefit?
Our target group is people who are affected by dementia or who are at risk of developing dementia. But also their carers and existing care facilities will benefit as it will provide relief for at home carers and helps people to remain at home for much longer. The local community will also benefit because the farm is community-operated. Community members have the opportunity to learn new skills and to contribute to economic growth and a socially important project while growing their own produce.
Careship Coorong will provide our clients with an opportunity to be valued for their abilities and to contribute to their communities. Careship Coorong will not only provide a social day care program in the form of daily work activities on the farm; it will also create a source of income that will eventually pay for this care. The farm helpers are given a socially valued role which will increase their self-esteem. The relief this care provides for the home carers will promote clients to live at home for a longer period, thus relieving existing care facilities.
What?
The comfort yurt needs new canvas in places and re-stitching of the old canvas. Some of the rafters need replacing, as well as part of the doors. We also need to install a timber deck on which the yurt will be erected.

All the work is done by 'Friends of the Farm' volunteers over 5 working bees.

The Challenges
A risk is that there will be no profitable crop in foreseeable future. The farm is run by volunteers and the main purpose is to provide meaningful activities and valued social roles for people in the community with dementia. Profits from produce, although important, are not vital to the operation of the farm.
Another risk is volunteer participation. We will overcome this by drawing on the volunteer base of a nearby community organisation if need be.
