Delusions of Slander
Can I make it in the metropolis that is Melbourne? It's like the plot of Coyote Ugly, but with no singing nor stripping nor romance nor American places, rather Melbourne and Adelaide. Also pictures of brown corduroy pants, dark-robed figures, philosophers, Alice in Wonderland, libraries, petals and hackers. Also true stories, mostly.
Tickets are on sale here:
http://www.melbournefringe.com.au/fringe-festival/show/delusions-of-slander/
The show is happening live in Melbourne at 6pm at Tuxedo Cat's The Urchin on:
Monday September 29th
Tuesday Sepember 30th
Thursday October 2nd
Friday October 3rd
Saturday October 4th
Sunday October 5th
if you're in Melbourne, or know anyone in Melbourne to share this with, please share and come along to the show!
A few rewards here include tickets to the show, but it's much less complicated for us both if you buy a ticket from the Melbourne Fringe Festival website or box office, as well as a Pozible reward. I'm thankful for whatever support you can give though! If giving money is a stretch, I'd appreciate any sharing you can do. Word of mouth is wonderful, plus you can ping me @cobismith on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram or Google+.
Thank you so much for your support!
Thanks
Massive thanks to Cassandra and Bryan who run Tuxedo Cat and have been supportive of my past work as a developing comedian. I'm happy that the majority of expenses for this show are going towards supporting an awesome Fringe venue, as well as the festival itself.
Thanks also to the Melbourne International Comedy Festival for supporting the Jeez Louise professional development program for women comedians. Participating in 2014 helped motivate me to actually do my own show in Melbourne.
Thanks to the innumerable people who've supported me so far, as well as everyone who supports this campaign!
How The Funds Will Be Used
$570 for Tuxedo Cat venue hire
$330 for Melbourne Fringe registration
$125 for public liability insurance
$50 Pozible fee
~$125+ for Pozible rewards
I've maybe underestimated the costs of Pozible rewards, including postcard printing and postage, drink buying and the myserious unknown extravagant reward (my financial planner would really not approve of that last reward. That's why I don't have one).
I'm flying back to Australia to do this show (as well as to see people I miss and some other gigs), but I'm not factoring the cost of flying and other life expenses, like eating or rent, into the costs for this show. Mostly because I feel guilty about the environmental impact of flying too much. If anyone wants me to offer a reward that involves carbon offsetting my flights for the next year, I'd be happy to create it. Let me know if you have other reward requests too.
The Challenges
If the projector fails, this grand plan to show pictures before revealing stories will be thwarted. In that case we might huddle around a laptop screen like we're at a hackathon, and I'll buy everyone a drink to apologise the show is not as slick as planned. Knowing Tuxedo Cat as a venue, this is a risk, but one that could lead to a more unique and fun experience anyway. Since my show's in the last week of the festival, hopefully they'd have ironed out any tech dramas before my show opens.
Another risk is that I've spent much of the last few months speaking French badly. It's been a long time since I was an ABC newsreader. I might be unintelligible in English now. If that happens, I'll trade storytelling for mime and clowning in gibberish for 40 minutes while people throw fruit at me.
If this Pozible campaign succeeds, I'm assuming the biggest risk is not going to eventuate. If it fails, this whole show might be a big epic failure, which you're witnessing. Luckily I've done enough improvisational theatre to deal with that!
thankful
every gesture of support is meaningful. Thank you!
New Friends zine
my talented fellow comedian, artist and award-winning poet friend Freya Dougan has offered copies her beautifully quirky 'New Friends' zine as a reward for the last 24 hours of my campaign! This reward is a copy of 'New Friends', including the cost of postage.
social media shoutout
Ping me on your choice of social media @cobismith so I can thank you publicly for your support! If you're a fellow #mfringe artist, let me know if you want me to share a certain link or promotional code about your show. Ditto if you're doing some artistic or entrepreneurial thing beyond the festival.
feminist statement
supporting the show because I'm a woman in comedy talking about women in media? I will either personally give you (at the show) or send to you a handwritten thankyou on a feminist statement-themed postcard
first season hipster
hipster who likes to do things before they're cool? I'll personally give you (at the show) or send a handwritten note on a vintage postcard to say thanks for supporting my first ever Melbourne festival season.
festival cup
during this summer in Geneva I've collected some cool cups. Why do we do disposable plastic in Australia instead of awesome souvenirs like these? I'm carrying these back to Melbourne with me and one can be yours.
Pozible success party
INCLUDES TICKET - This campaign closes at 5:30pm on Thursday 2 October, so by that evening's show I'll know if this campaign succeeded! If I'm elated, you'll be there to celebrate. If not, your pledge won't go through, so you can buy a ticket at Tuxedo Cat and have schadenfreude or commiserate in my failure. This reward is a ticket for the Thursday show + you'll get a copy of a group photo with my Pozible supporters who are happy to be photographed, in the event of success
closing night celebration
INCLUDES TICKET - celebrate closing night of the show and the festival with me and I'll buy you a drink after the show - plus I'll be able to relax and spend quality time with people now the show's season's done. There are closing night parties at Tuxedo Cat & Fringe Hub, so it's a good night to be out in Melbourne celebrating with performers! This reward is a ticket for the Sunday show + 1 drink.
extravagant benefactor
if $50 isn't too extravagant for you, be a founding member of my exclusive extravagant benefactor's club. I'll crowdsource suggestions for this uncertain but exclusive reward and you will reap the rare and mysterious benefits before the year's end.
Producer credit
I'll list you as a producer of the show when I put it on my website for posterity, and thank you each night of the show live in Melbourne.
scifi dice game
I supported a Kickstarter featuring Aussie illustrator Tim Mcburnie's work on these scifi game cards. Because I'm travelling around all the time things like this are just sitting in storage. It deserves a better home than in a box at my friend's house. This reward is a near-new Hunters of Arcfall scifi dice/tabletop game.
it's Saturday night!
INCLUDES TICKET - join me for the Saturday night show and I'll buy you a drink afterwards to say thankyou. This reward is a ticket for the Saturday show + 1 drink.
