The Stream / The Boat / The Shore / The Bridge has been selected to showcase at APAM! That's the Australian Performing Arts Market and it's happening in Brisbane this February. (See more at http://www.performingartsmarket.com.au/program/de... )
It's a big deal - industry delegates from around Australia and the world will converge upon Brisbane to see the best work AUS and NZ artists have created in the past two years. If they like what they see, they may book the work for their venues and festivals. We know companies that have worked all over the world since showcasing at APAM - one step at a time like this and Black Lung Whaling Firm to name but two.
In one sense it's a great pat on the back to just be selected - some important people have seen the waves we made while premiering at Next Wave and remounting for the Junction Arts Festival, and believe that the work has a value and flavour to it that presents Australian performance in the here-and-now.
And more excitingly, it is a chance for us to make a splash in foreign waters. If we do a good job and have an ounce of luck we might get to show the work well beyond Australia's shores.
But while this is a prestigious opportunity, it's not one that is fully funded and represents a personal financial risk to each artist working on the project. However with our good planning, a strong product and your support we think the risk is worth the reward.

How The Funds Will Be Used
The big cash costs are:
Public Liability Insurance - Which has cost us more than $1,500 for our two weeks on site
Travel - For 7x people from Melbourne to Brisbane return
Accommodation - For 7x people for around two weeks

Production Materials & Freight - We travel light, but to make a bespoke experience for each location we do need to make some special props for each new season and bring a few special things with us.
Per Diems - We work hard during our 8hr+ days so three square meals is a must while we realise this project!
Artist Fees - Notice how this is last on the list? We know what we personally gain from doing work that we love, but we also give a lot of ourselves too. There are hundreds of hours that each of us has contributed to getting this work made and shown and this trip to Brisbane is just the tip of the iceberg. We do professional quality work, but we rarely see cash rewards for that professional labour. In fact, we contribute our own cold hard cash, sacrifice hours at our casual jobs and offer our skills to this project because we love to share the experience.

The Challenges
Upon being accepted we did receive some funding from ArtsVic, which we are incredibly grateful for - it's quite an experience to receive an email offering cash, particularly without a long winded application process! But, it's only a CONTRIBUTION to the real costs outlined above. The main risks we face are having to put our own hands in our pockets to pay for this opportunity. While we already do so in kind, it would probably bankrupt each of us to have to pay for it all out of our meagre casual wages.

Having the support of APAM staff (via Brisbane Powerhouse) has meant that our slightly unusual use of public space is not only deemed safe, but sanctioned by the powers that be. No mean feat to wade through that bureaucracy and come out relatively dry!

Brisbane Boat Launch & Cruise PLUS 1x Preview Ticket Come along to the official launch of our wee beaut boat Kitty Clearwater on the Brisbane River at Southbank.
