In June of this year, I've been invited to do a month long artist residency at Red Gate Gallery, in Beijing, China. The purpose of the residency is to make a new video work to be screened at the residency's conclusion. The work will also form part of a solo show at Beam Contemporary, Melbourne in September. Additionally, I will be making sound recordings that form the raw materials of my live and recorded sound performances as 'Glass Bricks'.

Why?
Beijing's urban landscape is at a fascinating point as it rapidly shifts and develops. Following on from my 2012 project Drift (as part of Westspace's 'Today Your Love' series,) I will be engaging with the urban spaces of Beijing on foot- aimless wanderings, informed by my research into psychogeography, that provide unexpected readings of the environment and a sense of place.

In 2008, I had a 20 hour stop-over in Shanghai on my way back from Europe. It allowed me only enough time to wander, sleep & wander some more. Since then I have wanted to further explore the society, culture, economy and politics of the Chinese metropolis- Beijing being of the most densely populated urban regions in the world. I've investigated further and I've been drawn to other urban anomalies, which I now have a chance to visit:

The spooky ruins of an unfinished amusement park called "Wonderland" near Beijing.

The Stone Forest - A huge set of stalagmite-like limestone formations. I'll be visiting here as part of my research for a group show, currently in development for realisation in 2014.

Kangbashi City - This ghost city was built to house 1 million people, yet only has a population of 30,000.

Some things I've been up to recently:

The Red Gate Gallery Artist Residency
Red Gate Residency hosts artists, curators, writers and academics in the Beijing's north. They host ten residencies there, so I'll be able to engage with Chinese culture, as well as mix with a group of international artists, providing further links to international exhibition and collaboration opportunities. Accomodation is on-site and the gallery provides support with access to equipment and materials and in making connections with other artists and curators. And this will be my studio!

How will the funding be used?
Due to the timing of my acceptance into the residency, I have missed the deadline for Asialink funding, so I'm asking for the extremely generous financial support of my friends, family and colleagues. This charitable assistance will allow me to make the most of my time there, and to achieve my planned creative outcomes.

Funding raised by this campaign covers the residency fees, which includes the studio, accommodation and administration costs.

I cover rest, with costs such as:
- VISA
- flights
- travel insurance
- translators
- artist materials
- internal travel
- equipment hire
