We're Elbow Room, an independent theatre company from Melbourne, Australia, and we tell big stories in small spaces.
Last year, we made and premiered our tenth work in six years - a queer science fiction love story called 'The Motion of Light i,n Water'. inspired by the life and work of Samuel R. Delany and Marilyn Hacker, two of the boldest and bravest writers of the 1960s, 'Motion of Light' celebrates the strength we find through the differences between, and the power of imagination to help show us a better and more loving future.
It premiered at HotHouse Theatre in Albury-Wodonga, before moving to Melbourne's Theatre Works and being acclaimed by both theatre critics *and* sci-fi fans - a combination we'd barely dared to hope for.
This year, we're taking it to Brisbane's iconic Roundhouse Theatre, in partnership with La Boite, a company where many of us in Elbow Room began our careers. And we'd like your help.

We're an independent theatre company in Australia. Although we've been lucky to receive project funding in the past (including for the development of 'Motion of Light'), we don't yet have a permanent home nor annual funding.

Because of this, we have to find institutional partners for every project. We're very fortunate to partner with La Boite through their Independents program, but although they're helping us reduce our financial risk through assistance with marketing and technical support, we're still reducing our own professional fees substantially in order to make this project happen.

Although we strive to maximise the value that everyone gets from working on our projects, our actors, too, are taking a risk by travelling far from home to perform a new work. By contributing to our campaign, you'll help shore up the most important part of our work - our people.
