The Queensland Conservatorium Saxophone Orchestra's performances at the World Saxophone Congress XVI is part of their July 2012 International tour including a series of concerts at the Guildhall School of Music, London and the International Society of Music Education Conference in Greece. They are the only large ensemble from Australia to be invited to the WSC as well as the only performing ensemble from Australia to be invited to ISME. Our goal is to expand our network of music-appreciating people in addition to use the funds to allow travel and accommodation to Europe for this fabulous once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Since inception the Queensland Conservatorium Saxophone Orchestra has strengthened exponentially now enjoying its’ 5th year of evolution. Appreciating a diverse range of music styles, the QCSO are as comfortable performing Baroque as they are with contemporary classical in addition to jazz, rock, pop, gypsy and folk music. Keen to enthuse and educate younger students the ensemble tours to schools throughout the year to performing works arranged and composed by themselves, as well as tutoring and sharing their passion for the saxophone.

Career highlights include their successful recital as part of the July 2011 Australian Clarinet and Saxophone Festival in Melbourne, performing later in the month at the internationally acclaimed event The Queensland Music Festival in the Vaporisations project – a site specific work for massed saxophones developing an active sound installation which was recorded for national broadcast by the Australian Broadcasting Commission.

Given the rarity of the group in Australia, QCSO continually approaches Australian composers of all influences culminating in an annual ‘Australian Made’ concert at the Queensland Conservatorium. This has been a wonderful opportunity for the development and showcasing of Australian saxophone ensemble repertoire. They look forward to recording a CD of all-Australian composers for the medium of the saxophone orchestra.

The QCSO will continue passionately promoting new work for the saxophone ensemble medium and look forward to touring schools and townships of “Outback Australia” in 2013 as a special regional collaborative music education project.

A written thank-you :)
