DRILL’s next major dance program for young people, The Mountain Project, will be taking place in Term 3, 2015.

The Mountain Project follows on from our first primary school program, CONNECT4, featured in the video above, and a long history of making contemporary dance projects with local young people.

Thanks to funding and support from the Hobart City Council, DRILL will work with a core company of up to 25 young dancers aged 10 to 14 outside of school to create their own short dance work. Previously, DRILL projects have been open to dancers aged 14 and above, so this is the company's first time engaging with this younger age bracket.

Alongside the core company project, DRILL is also offering a 5-week residency to four local schools, free of charge. DRILL’s Artistic Director Joshua Lowe will work with students at each school for nine 75-minute sessions across five weeks between August 24th and September 24th.

The Mountain Project will respond to the ever-present kunanyi/Mt Wellington looming over Hobart and will ask the students to discuss and develop choreographic ideas surrounding the mountain’s effect on our community and history.

In the final week, the core company and all schools will come together for a combined performance day, performing for their peers, family and community.

All young participants will also be given the chance to design their own costume and write letters to a new inter-school buddy.

How The Funds Will Be Used

The money raised from this campaign will go towards funding the costumes, materials and part of the fees for the artists involved. This project is also a part of Arts Tasmania's Crowbar program, which will give another 50% ($1,250) if we are successful with this campaign.

The Challenges

One of the main challenges DRILL faces in Hobart is the need to build our participant and audience base due to the company short history here. While Launceston has benefitted from a long association with Stompin and Tasdance, it is evident that this is not the case in the south of the state. Working with small budgets, we would rather spend funds on enhancing the experience of the company members than extensive advertising.

DRILL plans to continue using social media to reach young people and audiences in Hobart, creating interesting images and videos that can easily be shared. Our work in schools and colleges will also ensure that students continue to hear about DRILL and have access to seeing our works.

The Mountain Project is also a strategic development to introduce DRILL to a younger age group, and for some, potentially prepare them to become a part of the senior company.

You can also help out by becoming our friend on Facebook and spreading the word about DRILL to your friends and family. The best thing you can do is simply come and see what we do best!
