Dylan Smyth

'The Newcastle Editions' are the evolution of the previous 2014-15 project: All the Suburbs of Newcastle. 2hrsnorth will once again be the publishing arm for this new project however this time around the series will be focused primarily on Dylan's photography and content.

What are 'The Newcastle Editions?

'The Newcastle Editions' is about celebrating Newcastle and all that is great about this fantastic part of the world. You can imagine it as Newcastle through the eyes of a local, seeing not just the picturesque beaches or harbour that make us famous but giving a much greater insight into what life here in Newcastle is really all about.

How will it work?

The success of this project will rely on subscribers. The cheapest and easiest way to get your hands on this project will be to subscribe to it through this crowdfunding campaign.

--TWO EDITIONS PER YEAR--

This project will come in 2 editions per calendar year mailed directly to subscribers starting in early 2017. Each of these editions will focus on a different theme about a different part of local life. 

The editions will be both a compilation of archived photographs from Dylan's collection plus the addition of new works.

What you will get?

Each edition will be different from the last, designed in a way which best reflects the work within it. Essentially any printed format is possible. A really important part of this project will be designing and developing each book as a unique piece.

Because of the change in each editions design I can't give specifics of exactly what you will be receiving however I can tell you it will be something along the lines of: 

An A5 or A4  colour book 32-48 pages, perhaps more.

A Tabloid sized newspaper 12-16 pages either colour or B&W

A set of 14 postcards + A3 or A2 poster

Any combination of the above in smaller sizes

...or perhaps something entirely different but of the same quality and volume as those above.


All work will continue to be professionally printed and presented to the standard of all 2hrsnorth and Dylan Smyth publications to date.

When you subscribe to this project you will be supporting Dylan's ongoing career as an artist, a career which encompasses print projects such as this along with ongoing exhibition work in Newcastle and nationally.  By supporting this project you are also supporting Dylan's broader Visual Arts career helping to keep him in his studio day in and day out continuing to work on various projects (next major exhibition is titled "Once Observed Thrice Contrived' showing at Photoaccess Canberra in late 2017).

The 2hrsnorth story so far

The 2hrsnorth; All the Suburbs of Newcastle project first began as an idea in 2014 and was developed into a very successful group project printing twelve different small books documenting 23 of Newcastle's wonderfully diverse suburbs by 13 local photographers. That project ultimately created 12 unique books and more then a thousand copies. It also allowed me to share the Newcastle story widely at national book fairs, local markets and countless publishing and photography websites and blogs.
