Ebony Frost

Are we addicted to electricity? Or have we just become spoilt and soft? Have we completely lost touch with our natural surroundings or are we just adapting to changing times?

This is my very first photographic exhibition, entitled 'Appetite Electric': a series of urban landscapes exploring the different ways we use electricity - as individuals and as a society - and whether we appreciate how easy our lives have become because of it.



This exhibition is part of the international photography festival Foto Freo 2012

I'm hoping my images will get people thinking about the different ways we use electricity and inspire a more grateful attitude :)

Because I am sometimes a little bit of an insomniac, in September 2010, I started a blog called The Night Owl, taking snapshots on the dark. I started looking at things quite differently in the dark and some of these images became the inspiration for this project.

(In case you'd like to know) a bit more about me... I have been a keen photographer since I was a kid and loved snapping away with mum's Polariod (many 'extreme close ups' of the dog - oops!). At uni I really loved losing whole days in the darkroom developing images from my Pentax K1000 and making all my friends part of my photography projects (thanks guys, you were very patient!). I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts, Mass Communication (Journalism & Design), from Curtin University in 1998.

Finally making the switch to digital in 2007, I travelled the world for 3 years, camera in tow, gaining an appreciation of the built environment, urban landscapes and travel photography.

Since returning to Perth, I have turned my lens toward the local creative scene, shooting images for Drum Media (examples below: Kimbra, Eskimo Joe & Blue King Brown), Kulcha and local emerging fashion designers (check out the full set images on my Flickr).
   

Although I spend a lot of time behind the lens, I also have a day job in Marketing & PR for a child health research institute.
