‘Hermitage’ is a piece written for a solo performer with various instruments. Its performance will be documented in its entirety as film and as audio. Hermitage is an endurance piece to be performed from sunrise till sunset, continuously, for 15 consecutive days.
I've been invited by King Island Cultural Centre to realise this project. The performance will take place between October 19 - November 3, 2013, atop historical Currie Harbour Lighthouse on King Island, northwest of Tasmania. It will be filmed as a documentary by James Wright - [ NON, Melbourne ]

It is not a coincidence that the Hermit character is an archetype. We all, at one time or another in our lives, seek solitude and retreat to find answers. Hermit's journey is one that we all wish to take with varying intensities of desire, as we know there are things to discover, important things, in solitude and reclusion.
‘Hermitage’ started out from this inner knowing.
I see music, at its core, as a series of decisions that involve sound and silence. I wanted to create a situation where a performer is left alone to explore this. Isolated solitude is widely practiced among most faiths and philosophies by those who wish to attain knowledge beyond arm's reach. Soon, it was evident to me that ‘Hermitage’ had to be an endurance piece, performed for an extended duration of time. Within the extremes of isolation and endurance, I believe, lie intriguing findings; musically and otherwise.
So, ‘Hermitage’ aims to practice and explore the act of performing in extreme circumstances. The performer is pushed to a realm far removed from the norm by having to perform from sunrise till sunset, continuously, for days on end. Performing, filming and recording this journey in its entirety blurs the lines between living and performing as well as between performance and ritual. Every gesture of the performer becomes significant as it potentially causes sound, or silence...
Performer is limited in space, impeded in his movement and is isolated. As a composer and as the performer, I am interested in the points where these limitations and impediments transform into opportunities of creative discovery. Negotiating the impediments and transforming them fascinate me and constitute the main focus of my research as a PhD student at Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
Hermitage will be exhibited as a video installation, it'll be released online in its entirety as a streamable video. It'll also be released as an audio album and a DVD set. The release date is the end of 2014. Although we are definitely aiming for earlier.

The Challenges
The major obstacle to the realisation of this project would be the lack of funds. I have already put in a grant application as a back-up to cover a third of the total costs. And if all else fails, there's also the slightly scary option of taking a loan from the bank. Aiaiai...
The challenges to this project are many and they are the reasons why I've had to dedicate 3 years to its development. Filming and recording such a long piece will require practical technical solutions. For this reason, working with a filmmaker experienced in capturing performance works and knowledgeable about technical aspects of filmmaking has been the vital requirement of Hermitage.
Another challenge is the physical and the mental strain the piece might have on me as the performer. However, one of the things I look forward to with interest and artistic curiosity is the times when I will lose control, focus and will be brought to edge. At these moments Hermitage will potentially yield more intriguing discoveries and unpredictable musical results.
