I’ve been selected for Proximity Festival 2014 and need your help to develop the work!

Different Kinds of Air, A Plant's Diary is a sensory tour through the air of different ages and places on Earth. Created for one audience member at a time, this experience will explore the intimacy and immediacy of air; how it is personal, enduring, and dynamic.

300 million years ago, in the Carboniferous Era, oxygen levels were 14% higher than today. This concentration of oxygen supported megafauna and flora – dragonflies with a wingspan of more than 75cm. Today, we can see the highest CO2 concentration in 800 000 years. How will this affect us and our trees? Our air is personal, it reflects the activities of the planet, and the appearance of its living occupants, both sentient and still. It permeates our bodies and connects us to the plants, the planet, and each other.

I have recently relocated to Perth from Sydney to undertake research at SymbioticA. This is an exciting opportunity to showcase my work in Western Australia for the first time, but it requires significant investment and resources. All funds will go directly towards materials for the work and purchasing enough air and airplants for each audience member!

Every dollar you donate goes twice as far thanks to matched funding!

Help me make Different Kinds of Air, A Plant's Diary happen!

Thanks to Creative Partnerships, every dollar you pledge up to $1500 will be matched through their Match Crowdfunding for the Independent Arts Sector initiative, provided I reach my target!

Different Kinds of Air, A Plant's Diary will be developed and presented as part of Proximity Festival at Fremantle Arts Centre, 22 October – 1 November 2014. Proximity Festival is the first platform in Australia dedicated to the creation and presentation of one-on-one intimate performances. Co-founded by James Berlyn, Sarah Rowbottam and Kelli Mccluskey, Proximity Festival provides critical peer support, encouraging artists from all disciplines to experiment with new modes of practice in the creation of participatory art. www.proximityfestival.com

About the Artist

Now based in Perth, Emily is currently undertaking research at SymbioticA using weeds as the conceptual framework to explore notions of the postnatural. Her recent exhibitions include: Escapees, Stowaways, Trespassers, and Freeloaders (GalleryEight), Air Plants and Helium (ArtLaab), and Endangered (Saatchi and Saatchi Gallery). Emily graduated from the College of Fine Arts, University of New South Wales with First Class Honours in Digital Photography, and she holds a Masters in Peace and Conflict Studies from Sydney University.

How The Funds Will Be Used

All funds are to be used to acquire materials for the show. This includes the components of the different kinds of air, airplants for each audience member, and the parts for the custom made apparatus.
Airplants $200
Air/ Gases $2680
Administration $120

The Challenges

The greatest challenge for this work involves engineering the mechanisms to contain and tap the different types of air. Another challenge is to develop an enveloping sensory, and repeatable performance experience for over 100 unique audience members.
