Our Stories is a 7 week course that allows seniors to tell their autobiographical stories through words, pictures and film in order to preserve our shared history and enhance wellbeing in older people in the community. It is a multi-modal program due to the nature of the class participants. Some require to be video-taped and have their words transcribed due to physical inability to write, and others prefer to write with assistance. The course is flexible and adaptable to a range of abilities, and was developed in order to increase services available to the elderly that empower them.
We are looking to move the program into nursing homes as a part of their recreational program in order to further enhance the lives of residents.
We need support to cover the cost of materials and production. For example, scrapbooking materials, photo printing and scanning. We aim to reach 20 people by the end of the year through the course. Materials for each person costs approximately $115.00.
Costing information is based on the pilot program that ran in Little Bay Coast Centre for Seniors this year. Four people completed the program and took home a finished product of an autobiography book that will stay in their family to be passed down over generations. Participants also had their memories filmed. All of the participants found it an interesting, and even therapeutic process. Further information is available on the website:
