A new craft beer… traditionally brewed, environmentally conscious, full of complex flavours and packaged in rustic bottles.  One hundred percent produced on the pristine island of Tasmania.  Welcome to Brew Nouveau.

Breaking new ground

Tasmania currently has no brewpubs, and Brew Nouveau aims to change this.  We will craft beers on a nano-scale 200L brewery which will mostly be sold through the on-site bar.  Brew Nouveau will be based in a yet to be determined location between Hobart's city centre and North Hobart, in a growth area for restaurants and nightlife.

The goal of this Pozible project is to enable Brew Nouveau to purchase a second-hand Spiedel Braumeister nano-brewery.  It is capable of producing 200L of wort (unfermented beer) per brew.  A traditional method of open fermentation that results in more complex yeast derived characteristics will occur in round, shallow, stainless steel former milk vats.  The aim is to initially produce about 750L of beer per week to be sold from the brewery bar, bottleshops, providores, and pubs that support craft beer in Tasmania.

Brew Nouveau's beers will be packaged in kegs and corked, wire caged bottles, before undergoing a traditional re-fermentation process that carbonates the beer naturally.

It’s all in the taste

At their core, Brew Nouveau's beers will be based on Tasmanian barley, hops and water.  The biggest point of difference will be that each beer uses something intrinsically Tasmanian in its ingredients or production process.

Some of the beer recipes being developed include ingredients such as native pepper, green malted rye, coffee, sassafras, highland peat, organic oats, honey, and seasonal fruit.  Brew Nouveau's oak cask maturation program will feature barrels from leading Tasmanian distilleries and wineries.

Brew Nouveau's beers will be unconventional.  There are already a great many craft breweries in Tasmania, Australia and elsewhere producing incredible true-to-style interpretations of world classic beers.  Let's make this clear now: Brew Nouveau will not attempt to produce a 'classic' range of beers.

Brew Nouveau's beer philosophy

The concept of Brew Nouveau incorporates Place, People and Product.

By referencing real, contemporary narratives of the people and places of Tasmania in its 'unconventional' beers, Brew Nouveau will tap into the great marketing potential of the Tasmanian brand and develop a strong basis for collaborative promotion.

As a brand, Brew Nouveau will emphasise the provenance of its ingredients as essential to understanding the flavours and motivation behind each beer that is released.  From our perspective the elegance of beer is in its simplicity as an agriculturally derived product, and as an expression of the places and people from which its ingredients are sourced.

While paying homage to the great brewing traditions of the world, Brew Nouveau's collaborative, Tasmanian-focused approach will mean that its products will be impossible to replicate in the same way anywhere else.

Brew Nouveau will become an authentic expression of Tasmania and all that makes this place special: distinctive, high quality, natural, down-to-earth, environmentally conscious products grown and crafted by a tight-knit, friendly, progressive, and creative community.

Collaboration, simplicity and uniqueness.  Quality not quantity.  Authenticity.  These are Tasmania's natural advantages, and Brew Nouveau's original approach to building on these will represent a unique contribution to the 'clean, green, and clever' Tasmanian brand.

Behind the dream

Evan Hunter is the creator of the Brew Nouveau concept.  With over five years of experience in craft brewing and distilling in Tasmania, Evan aspires to create consistent, high quality niche products that stand proudly apart from other craft beers. 

Such artisan products are good because their diverse flavours bring colour to our lives, they are healthier for us than their mass-produced cousins, they are often made in an environmentally conscious manner, and their production generates great social and economic benefits for the communities in which they are made and sold.

As a brewer, Evan believes it is his personal role to be crafting products that are the best possible expression of the ingredients at his disposal.

Timeline

Brew Nouveau is currently at the concept stage.  It has been brewer Evan Hunter's dream for several years to establish his own business, and his idea is now gathering momentum with many old and new friends pledging their enthusiasm and support in various ways.  While it is difficult to place a timeline on a project like this in its early stages, especially where finding a premises and getting necessary licences are concerned, the goal is for the grand opening to occur in the second half of 2014.

Your support

Financial support is required because there is an opportunity fast approaching to purchase a second-hand Spiedel Braumeister brewery from a company in Melbourne.  Reaching the funding goal and being able to buy this equipment will save over $8,000 compared to the cost of a brand new Spiedel Braumeister and will get Brew Nouveau up and running much sooner.

Purchasing the Spiedel Braumeister will be a significant step forward, however, it will still represent under 20% of the initial investment required to get Brew Nouveau off the ground.  The remainder will be funded by debt and investment based on community collaboration - plus a lot of hard work!
