What do a dusty set of cattle years, a melanoma and the Lion King have in common? Well they are all parts of the story that led Felicity (aka Flic) Brown to her very own runway event showcasing her millinery masterpieces at New York Fashion Week.
Flic hails from Broome, a remote town in Western Australia's pristine Kimberley region. 12 months ago she was diagnosed with a melanoma and after successful treatment set off to pursue a life long dream and attend a runway show at New York Fashion Week. Naively thinking she could buy a ticket once in New York, Flic was disappointed to learn that the events are invite only and scoring a ticket would be highly unlikely at that late stage.
Mulling over this, she was at the concierge in her New York hotel wanting to book tickets to a Broadway show, patiently waiting while the people in front of her had the concierge girls in tears because they were so rude and abusive. Once it was her turn Flic was just her beautiful, natural self and calmed the staff. The girls yarned for a while (as Flic has a tendency to do!) and in chatting they discovered she had a desperate yearning to attend NYFW. As luck would have it, the concierge had a ticket to a NYFW show she couldn't use and gave it to Flic.
Flic, totally beside herself with excitement, went along, blogged about it and coincidentally met the organiser of the venue who is responsible for organising the gig for new and upcoming emerging designers. Within 2 weeks she had a post from him on her blog inviting her to not only attend New York Fashion Week in September 2014 but to showcase her 2015 Spring/Summer collection!
As you can imagine, to undertake the 17,000km journey from Broome in remote Western Australia (it's closer to Singapore than it is to Sydney and the nearest capital city is Dili in East Timor!) to New York for her show on Sunday 7 September at the Helen Mills Event Space will cost a fledgling milliner quite a few thousand dollars, so the entire small town of Broome is getting behind Felicity Brown to crowdfund her New York Fashion Week adventure, and we think you should too!
History of Hats by Felicity
Hats by Felicity was born from Flic's passion for creating headwear and for the Australian outback, its people and travelling. Her millinery hobby started when she lived and worked on remote sheep and cattle stations and it came out of pure necessity.
Flic and the station staff always went to the local races but also worked up until the day, leaving little time for purchasing new headwear. So she started altering existing hats (everyone has a hat of some description in their possession) and they would dress up and be a part of the day. When she left station life and made Broome her home, ladies continued to send Flic their hats for altering, so after much research and excitement, she taught herself the basic techniques of millinery and created Hats by Felicity.
In May 2010 Flic travelled to cattle stations in the Gascoyne, Pilbara and Kimberley regions of WA with a collection of hats and soon discovered that the initial need still exists! Hence the next chapter of her career was born.
Now her hats are worn by celebrities and she is about to showcase her first collection at New York Fashion Week 2014.

Recent Media
Flic will use your generous crowdfunding donation to cover the costs of getting to New York and putting on the show, which she estimates will be in the region of $35,000.
This includes airfares, accommodation, models' fashion attire, music, publicity and the logistics of getting an entire hat collection safely to New York!

The potential risks of this show scare Flic witless, but with her usual organisational style and panache there will be a management plan in place to cover all eventualities! Her biggest fear is the hats going missing in transit on the 17,000km journey, and not being able to afford the show. Whilst we can't help with the first one, we certainly can with the second!
