The Epic: retelling badass stories from around the world.

Presented by The Blue Room Theatre and us – Finn O’Branagáin & Scott Sandwich – The Epic is on at The Blue Room Theatre from 8 to 13 June.

Check out our Facebook event!

The Epic is a map of the world through myths and national texts. Using performance poetry, we retell stories that are or have been part of a cultural fabric. Many of these stories have lost relevance, interest, or have faded away over time – our goal is to drag them into the modern world, peel them to pieces and make them present again. There are stories that are lesser known to modern Australia, as well as works that contemporary audiences think they know; we retell them in imaginative ways or from an alternative point of view. We talk about who has ownership over the stories - who is allowed to tell them. Is it us- two white, middle-class, 20 somethings? Even if we really love the stories? Even if we treat them with respect?

The Epic is presented as a performance lecture with theatrical poems, concurrently exploring our love of engaging with these texts. Certain texts have remained with us, and we want to know why. They tell the stories of who we were – are we still the same? How are we different? While we want the audience to go through the same tribulations and problems with each text as we discover them (and to reach the same moments of confusion), our ultimate goal is to uncover the joy of exploring these texts, whether they are old, untranslatable, hard to find, or considered cliché.

The Blue Room have been amazingly supportive, and we're excited to be part of their Season One this year.

This is us performing at their launch, presenting Don Quioxte:

Thanks to Creative Partnerships Australia’s MATCH program, every dollar you give to this campaign will be matched dollar for dollar provided we reach our campaign target of $4000.

So: Every $1 dollar you give gives us $2!
We're raising money to pay our wonderful team and build an awesome set.
As well as getting the great feeling of becoming a money-doubling wizard, we've got some fun rewards for your generosity.

How The Funds Will Be Used

Our fundraising goals are to cover upfront costs and to pay our team.
Finn and Scott will only make money from this project if we sell out - and that’s ok with us. Because it’s our own work, (and we’ve had such fun making it,) we’re happy to take this risk, but we want to make sure the people we’re working with can rely on us.

Our upfront costs:
* Getting Scott to Perth so he can perform with Finn in the show. Otherwise, he’ll have to Skype in. And we all know how dodgy wifi is. (This is actually how we made the show - but that's another story, that we'll fill you in about in the updates.)

* Paying our publicist and paying for marketing, so people will know about the show and will come to see it. We’re proud of our work, and want to share it with as many people as possible. We’re working with Jamie Breen of Very Serious publicity, so we know we’re in really good hands here.

* Set design and production, so we have a great space to tell you the stories from. Local whiz-kid designer Desmond Tan (who also drew that kickass picture in the poster) is making us a wonderful and beautifully imaginative set, that will look like a [***** *** ** ****!] (no spoilers!) so we know youcan’t wait to see that. We can’t wait to see it either!

* The inimitable Joe Lui from Renegade Productions and winner of Perth Fringeworld's Spirit of the Fringe Award is designing our lighting and making us look like babes.

* We are making the media component of the show ourselves, and having money upfront will mean that the outcome will hopefully resemble Carl Sagan’s ‘Cosmos’ and not be shot entirely on our phones’ cameras.

The Epic is supported by Creative Partnerships Australia through MATCH.

This wonderfully good programme of matched funding allows us to DOUBLE your impact. This means if you give us $10, we get $20. If you fund a one way ticket to Perth, we can still send Scott back to Sydney! If you fund half the set, WE STILL GET THE WHOLE SET!
This is such a great deal for us, and we hope it is an emotional rush for you to be able to help us twice as much as you had planned. It’s certainly a rush for us!

But we can only make use of this opportunity if we are fully funded up to our target. Otherwise we get nothing, ziltch, nada! Sad faces and Skype version of Scott all round.

So please, jump on this wildly outrageous and arm-flailing train, and help us make the show live up to its name.

The Challenges

We've already overcome the challenges of working together from other ends of the continent, we're ready to take on Independent Theatre!
