Global Poetics Tour
Global Poetics Tour set to blow the lid off the slam poetry scene in Australia
August 31 to September 18, 2011
The Global Poetics Tour features three New York City slam poets visiting Australia for the first time. Jive Poetic, Mahogany L Browne and Ken Arkind from New York's Nuyorican Poets Café will appear at this year’s Melbourne Writers Festival (MWF), Brisbane Writer’s Festival (BWF), Overload Poetry Festival (OPF) and independent performances and workshops. The 21-day tour will take in the East Coast capitals Melbourne, Canberra, Brisbane, Sydney.
The Global Poetics Tour is an exciting new venture where the traditions of poetry and social awareness meet, producing a vivid hybrid on a dynamic and accessible scale. It is a brilliant opportunity for the diverse youth in Australia to participate in a growing form within the creative scene. Featuring live performances, workshops and slam competitions, the tour will expose Australian audiences to three of the United States’ most successful slam poetry champions and is set to blow the lid off the burgeoning slam poetry scene in Australia.
The Global Poetics Tour will kick off Australia’s first National Slam Poetry Summit to be held in Canberra. The tour will also feature independently produced events at South Melbourne’s cult café, St ALi, Tell It Like It Is at Footscray Community Arts Centre, Sydney’s Word in Hand and Brisbane’s Black Star cafe featuring Nuyorican style poetry slams hosted by Melbourne's 2010 Overload Poetry Festival Slam Poetry Champion Luka Haralampou with performances by Jive, Mahogany and Ken at selected venues.
Promoting slam poetry as an accessible literary form for all people to expressively contribute to an informed and vibrant society, the Global Poetics Tour 2011 needs your assistance to benefit the growing slam poetry scene on our doorsteps.
Your financial and in-kind assistance will contribute to the future foundations of the Global Poetics Tour and slam poetry’s local and inter-continental relationships.
Ideally we need 350 friends of Global Poetics Tour 2011 to pledge $10 each or 175 friends to pledge $20. All friends will go onto the ‘Global Poetics Tour Friends Roll Poem’ to be read out live by Jive Poetic, Ken Arkind and special guests during the ‘Tell It Like It Is’ event, 16 September at Footscray Community Arts Centre. Supporters will also be acknowledged on on the Global Poetics website, facebook page and be able to receive tickets to events, tour t-shirts and more.
The ‘Global Poetics Tour Friends Roll Poem’ will be filmed and released online as part of our social media campaign and etched into the Global Poetics Tour foundations.
Pledged funds will go towards the documentation, evaluation and promotions of the Global Poetics Tour 2011 and assist with the international touring poets accommodation costs during independently produced events in Sydney and Melbourne.
The tour is co-produced by Bo Svoronos and Fiona Brook, independent collaborators and cultural brokers in partnership with the Centre for Poetics and Justice (CPJ). CPJ is a fresh, dynamic and young organisation performing poetry to a growing circle of diverse youth groups interested in slam and performance poetry.
