SYNOPSIS
Isabelle, a neurotic teen, encounters paranoia-inducing clues during her sleep paralysis that lead her to make detrimental decisions against her family.
Isabelle is subconsciously withdrawing from her family after the recent loss of her father and is thus experiencing sleep paralysis. She is constantly haunted by a dark figure that begins to impede on her daily life. Isabelle’s delusional mindset leads her to believe that her mother Judy is both the figure and the cause of her father’s death. She feels that the only way to defeat the figure and avenge her father is to kill Judy. Her older brother Hayden attempts to stop her, but we are left without knowing whether her mission was a success; only to assume the worst.
WHY I WANT TO MAKE IT
As I have experienced sleep paralysis a number of times, I wanted to write a story about something that I was familiar with and share it with those who might not necessarily know what it is. Sleep paralysis occurs when the sufferer experiences a disruption in their sleep cycle, and as a result renders them unable to move when they wake up.
An extension of this is that the sufferer can experience hallucinations, which can often involve a malevolent creature or dark figure that cannot be escaped. It can occur as a result of a number of things including lack of sleep, stress or falling asleep on your back, which are symptoms that will be explored throughout the film.
The central protagonist, Isabelle, is a chronic sufferer of sleep paralysis as a result of her father's death haunting her memory. Her case is quite extreme to exhibit her inability to cope with her grief. In contrast to this her mother's choice of a coping mechanism sees her as a workaholic, whereas her older brother Hayden handles it by making jokes at the worst of times.
This leads to Isabelle's subconscious withdrawal from her family and thus her inevitable mental decay. We will present this throughout the film via a dark figure that visits her during the night which begins to impede on her daily life.

Visuals
The 'Inertia' team has recently been conducting some makeup tests. This has been beneficial for us to see how well we are able to control the natural light in our location and what lighting we will have to implement. We have been exploring the importance of contrast and shadows that are essentially vital for a horror film.
Our colour palette will remain within the blues and blacks in Isabelle's bedroom during the night to give off the spooky vibes that we desire. During the day the kitchen will appear white and sterile, as this is a representation of Isabelle's perception of her mother. Please see some of our results below:

Isabelle's Bedroom - dark, contrasting night scenes

Kitchen and Dining Room - bright, harsh day scenes
