The Yellow House Jalalabad is a unique space where artists, actors, musicians and writers have created the very first artist run space and arts centre in Afghanistan, funded solely by two Australian artists George Gittoes and Hellen Rose. Within the safe walls there is The Secret Garden Cafe where for the first time women and men can sit and freely converse over a cup of tea. This is a place where the very first children's theatre workshops are being held in over 30 years of war. Boys and girls working with older experienced actors on a stage built and decorated by George Gittoes himself. There are no arts schools in Afghanistan for young people to train in and there is no opportunity for young people to study any of the arts of their own or any other culture.
George made his latest super doc Love City Jalalabad partly about The Yellow House and its creation and partly about the Afghan actors and their world.
There are so many possibilities for these young people, and The Yellow House. We would like to see them have just some of the opportunities that we have in Australia and to see the arts and freedom of expression flourish again in Afghanistan.
The Yellow House Jalalabad costs $20,000 per year on just minimal running costs.
