I am an artist and researcher who wishes to travel to Istanbul to present my latest research paper exploring telepathy, clouding and extended cognition at a very significant international conference for artists and art theorists. This will continuing my self-funded postdoctoral research into telepathy and extended cognition in art, culture and society that I have undertaken by way of library access provided by a Honorary Research work at the College of Fine Arts, University of New South Wales from 2011-14. If I receive funds that exceed the amount required for this conference I would extend my travel to meet with renowned artist, theorist and neuroscientist Warren Neidich (Los Angeles/Berlin) and international expert on telepathy and affect Professor Lisa Blackman (London), both of whom contacted me last year in order to start dialogue for research collaborations, and whose work is significantly shaping my current and future directions. I would also extend my stay in Istanbul to do further research into recent controversial claims of telekinesis associated with Turkish Prime Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, which have featured in national Turkish and international news reports.

Interestingly enough, some of my current research looks at the crowd funding of my former teacher Marina Abramovic as an extension of both her work with telekinesis and neuroheadset-interactive performance art, so when my friend Gianni Wise suggested I consider crowd funding to get me to Istanbul I had to agree. Thanks Gianni! It will be interesting to see if I can gain enough telekinetic crowd funding to get me to this conference on clouding – the UFO artwork I am completing still doesn’t fly!

How The Funds Will Be Used

$2200 for a flight to Istanbul, arriving Tuesday 24th June and departing Tuesday 1st July. My paper ‘All that is Solid: Aesthetics of Quantum Telekinetics and Telepathic Smart Dust’ was accepted for presentation at the Third International Conference on Transdisciplinary Imaging at the Intersections between Art, Science and Culture.

$1000 to stay in a hotel near the conference venue for eight nights, arriving June 24 the day before the conference from June 25-27 – the four days after the conference will be spent exploring contemporary art of Istanbul and conducting preliminary artistic research into media reports that the former news anchor and editor-in-chief of private Turkish broadcaster 24, Yigit Bulut, and his claim that ‘certain powers’ were attempting to kill controversial Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan using telekinesis.

$300 for travel insurance, transport and food.

I have applied for a $1000 Developing and Recognising Talent sponsorship with my local council and if I am successful with that award I will be able to use $1000 of this Pozible crowdfunding to instead maximise the long flight expense to Europe and visit London $150 flight from Istanbul to work with my former teacher Marina Abramovic on her forthcoming performance event at Serpentine Gallery. It is a long way to go for such a short time otherwise! I discuss Abramovic's work in my research paper presented at the conference in Istanbul, so this is a great opportunity to potentially maximize the long flight to Europe with further research and networking. It will cost me about $350 extra to fly back from London instead of departing from Istanbul. That would leave about $300 to go towards paying rent back home without being able to receive Centrelink allowance for two weeks whilst overseas, and $200 to go toward the artwork I make in response to research on prime minister Erdogan’s telekinesis in Istanbul, which does not currently have a budget. I still have not heard if I am successful with the DART sponsorship (update May 23, 2014). It has only been approved by the manager and director of that section of local council and now has *yet to be approved by the General Manager*. I will advise here ASAP if I am successful with the DART sponsorship

The Challenges

As an artist who is devoted to expertimental and inventive contemporary art projects, I have not really yet worked how to make a living from my art, and as an artist researcher who is often classified as no longer ‘emerging’, without gallery representation nor regular university or other employment, my main hurdle is funding.

A postcard with ‘Face Off’ video still (image) on one side and original hand drawing in pencil inspired by Istanbul, signed by Jacquelene Drinkall, each 105 x 150mm. Only 500 available, mailed after I return.
