‘Powerful’ - ‘Amazing’ - ’Engaging’ - ‘Sobering in its massive sadness’
We knew we had a pretty powerful play with a timely, thought provoking message BUT never in our wildest dreams could we ever have foreseen the impact and reaction it had on our audiences.
'Under the Bridge' had it's world premiere on 1 July 2011 in the Kirkwood Theatre, Waitara NSW Australia to an invited audience of social workers that work with the homeless. Organisations such as, St Vincent de Paul, The Salvation Army, Lifeline, Mission Australia. Our greatest fear of 'did we get it right' was on the line this night.... AND YES! WE DID!
The overwhelming reaction of this 'in the know' audience and their call of the play deserving a wider audience was the catalyst for us to take this production ON TOUR of Sydney suburbs. The clincher was the following 8 performances. How 'Old Bill' touched the audience and made them take stock of their attitude towards the homeless. The final scene never failed to produce tears from the audience every performance.
So what is 'Under the Bridge' about?
A two act (90min) play set under the pedestrian walk bridge to the railway station in Hornsby NSW Australia. It is about the life of a homeless man ‘Old Bill’ who has walked the streets of Hornsby for the past fifteen years. But his favourite place to watch his world is under this bridge. Right from the outset you encounter Old Bill and he encounters you as he takes you on a rollercoaster journey of emotions through his life, the people he loved and lost and the sequence of events through flash back vignettes to the 80's, 90's and 00's that lead to his current lifestyle. You also witness in real-time, the present and the problems he faces everyday.

All will be playing their original roles on the tour with the exception of Johnathan who will be commencing his BA at university in 2012. Recasting auditions have begun.

I won't pull any punches here... I have been in this business for 39 years as Actor, Director, Writer, Producer & Tutor. After all this time, this is the type of role I have been waiting for, wanting to do. I guess I'm now classed as a veteran and this is my tour de force. It's the best I have ever written and I gave 9 performances of my life, and with your help, I will give many, many more! When you come and see it and I'm sure you will. You will see not an actor but a homeless man for I AM Old Bill for the entire 90 minutes I'm on stage.

Who is the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai PCYC Theatre Co ?
The Theatre Company was founded in February 2010 for ages 16+. It's first performance season was in November that year of four one act plays. Under the Bridge is our first full length play in our second season (2 seasons per year). The company also provides training in the 'Art of Acting' and all other aspects to theatre.
The theatre company is under the umbrella of the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai PCYC (Police & Community Youth Club) which has been established in Hornsby for the past 43 years. The state wide governing PCYC celebrates its 75th year in NSW next year.
Tell us about the tour and how it will be promoted
The tour is proposed to commence with previews to settle in the new cast members and staging crew and to test the new portable set, lighting and sound systems in our own Kirkwood Theatre and a couple of venues within in the upper North Shore of Sydney and the Central Coast.
The tour proper will be 'on the road' in late January 2012 and continue for a minimum 6 - 8 months. Performances days and times on offer will be Friday, Saturday Nights and Sunday Matinees. Saturday matinees are available but will only be in conjuction with a night performance within the same venue.
The tour will be promoted by the same organisations that inspired it. In essence the touring company will be the 'Crispy Creme Donuts' of the theatre world. Each organisation will organise and promote, through their networks throughout Sydney, 'Under the Bridge' theatre nights with percentage of the proceedes going to homlessness projects. They will secure venues, sell tickets and promote the production through the supplied promotion kit: generic posters, flyers, programs and media kit.
How will the funding be used?
This will provide initial finance for the construction of a portable touring set for any size venue. Hire of portable light system or purchase of 2nd hand system. Hire or purchase of portable sound system. Initial production of promotional material such as; generic posters, flyers, tickets and programs. Production of media kits. Initial finance for venue hire and deposits. Costumes/props, as some in the original production were the actors personal property. All insurances are covered by the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai PCYC.
