Arctic Circle Residency Expedition
Update
I would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who has pledged to my Arctic Circle expedition so far. Your support means the world to me. In just 48 hours I reached my initial target, which is pretty overwhelming. I can't wait to send you all some amazing rewards. Because crowd-funding is all or nothing, meaning if you don't reach your target you don't get a cent, I set my goal at what I felt was an achievable target. I still have a few thousand dollars in expenses, so every dollar raised beyond this point will still go directly to my project.
About me
Hello, my name is Hailey Lane, and I'm an Australian photo-based artist. Inspired by a deep affection for nature and a desire to preserve it, I aim to challenge the way we understand our experience of the natural world and our fragile place within it. My work has been exhibited in Australia, China, Romania and the Netherlands.
Additional information about my work can be found at:
About the project
I have been invited to take part in The Arctic Circle Program, a one-of-a-kind international residency aboard a traditionally rigged tall ship, which will sail for three weeks from Svalbard, Norway, to the Arctic Circle in June 2017.
The Arctic Circle Program is an annual expeditionary residency that brings together international artists, scientists and educators who collectively explore the mountainous Arctic Archipelago. The program provides the opportunity for participants to pursue their personal projects on board while exploring interdisciplinary collaborations with the expedition’s fellow participants.
This otherworldly setting and the influence from the fellow artists, scientists and educators aboard will be the perfect place to research and develop a new body of work. Due to the rapid freezing and thawing of glacial ice, the Arctic Ocean is affected by climate change faster than any other place on earth. It is my goal to take detailed observations that will capture this landscape before it is lost or irreversibly altered.
I will use both film and digital cameras to record these observations. I wish to experiment and extend my practice during this time by using a layering technique that incorporates maps and photographs to create composite works. Having not used this process before in my practice, research and experimentation will play a significant role in this project. I also aim to record my observations through notes and sketches.
The contributions raised will assist with the costs of the subsidised residency fees and some of the gear required to work in this extreme climate.
Many thanks,
Hailey

How The Funds Will Be Used
The Arctic Circle Program is run by The Farm, Inc., a not-for-profit based in New York. The subsidised program fee is $6300 USD, which is $8,400 AUD at the time of writing. I need your support to purchase the gear and materials required for the expedition and partial help with the program fee.
Breakdown (all costs in AUD):
- $8,400 in residency fees ($6300 USD);
- $3558 for flights and insurance;
- $700 for Arctic rated clothing and footwear and;
- $1000 for gear and materials.
=$13,658 total cost of the expedition.
With a Pozible goal of $3,000 minus the cost of the rewards and Pozible fees, my goal is to raise approximately $1800 and $2,200 to put towards this opportunity.
Any support would mean the world to me. Thanks for your help in making this project possible.
This project is also supported by The Helpmann Academy and Arts South Australia, so I would like to take this chance to thank them. Additional information on these organisations can be found at:
The Challenges
Since The Arctic Circle is a well-established international program, there are no significant risks or challenges beyond funding the trip. The risks are minimum during the voyage itself, as the logistics for this expedition have already been well considered by the director, members and the crew of The Arctic Circle Expedition. That said, our intended route through the Arctic Ocean is subject to change in the event of extreme weather. As long as I don’t fall into the ocean and get carried away by a narwhal, it should be smooth sailing.
