I have been invited to be part of an outrageous arts festival in Alice Springs called ‘FREE BBQ CASH GIVEAWAY’ this September! Yaaaayyyyyyyy! This festival has been created by Elephant Island and the ARI (Artist Run Initiative) Watch This Space.
Since moving to Alice in 2010, I've had the privilege of working in remote indigenous art centres, contributing to community visual art events and festivals and in 2012 I played my first DJ set at Wide Open Space Festival.
The desert is full of unique, inspiring artists and it's a place where you are encouraged to create and perform- the weirder the better! This magical place is where 'Drazic's Girlfriend' was born.
'Drazic's Girlfriend' is the name of my alter ego superstar DJ that emerged after a lifetime of singing into hair brushes and lip synching in front of Video Hits, mimicking my pop idols. As the name suggests, she's the heartthrob's girlfriend, all the boys want her and all girls wanna be her. She unlocks the tiny juke box inside your heart and transports you back to your bedroom circa 1996, where everyone is inherently a superstar. She assumes the character from all the posters on your teenage wonderwall and brings them to life. Some of the best parties are when you are at home with your mates, dancing in the living room getting ready for a party- Drazic's Girlfriend evokes the best pre-party party vibes everrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
After spreading the party vibes in Melbourne and on the east coast for a couple of years I want to come back to the desert to perform as 'Drazic's Girlfriend' at 'FREE BBQ CASH GIVEAWAY', but this time I want to make my own costume and build a set for my performance. I'll also be creating some comic video art to be screened during the festival.

Our exciting funding situation
Initially this project was going to be put on completely through volunteer hours and begged/ borrowed/ stolen materials. However,
we have had some exciting news:
Thanks to Creative Partnerships Australia, every dollar you give will be matched up to $1000 through their Match: Crowdfunding for the Independent Arts Sector initiative.
This means that every dollar you donate is sort of like two dollars! Hooray!
In addition to this matched funds campaign, there are also seven other individual artists from around Australia aiming to raise $1,000 each for their involvement in FREE BBQ CASH GIVEAWAY, as well as Elephant Island who are looking to raise $2000. These fellow-Pozible artists are the key collaborating artists who had initially volunteered their time free of charge. The opportunity to take part in the matched funds program means that these artists can now be fairly payed for their time, and also have the scope to be more ambitious with their projects. As this group is made up of mostly emerging artists, we feel that the matched funds opportunity has acted like a sort of instant karma for a group of amazing artists that never fail to throw themselves into projects despite often going unpaid.
As thrilled as we are about the matched funds program, the funding does come with a catch - which is - if any of the nine Pozible campaigns for FREE BBQ CASH GIVEAWAY fail, then none of the raised funds will be matched. Which means that if one of the campaigns misses it's target by $1 none of the funds will be matched......it's scary.....

How The Funds Will Be Used
The way in which the matched funds are being divided between the artists is very simple, the funds raised through the individual Pozible campaigns will go straight to the individual artists. Which means if I am fortunate to raise an amount over my funding target, these funds will go to me to assist in covering my costs associated with travel, development and time invested in the project. The funds that are to be matched, which is a maximum amount of $1,000 being matched for this campaign, will go towards covering some of the other costs of putting on the festival.
The funds that I am looking to raise will go towards:
$500 for flights to Alice Springs.
$250 for materials for building a set to be incorporated into the stage for 'FREE BBQ CASH GIVEAWAY'.
$100 for props and costume costs.
$150 for a glitter cannon and smoke machine

The Challenges
Getting up to Alice will be a challenge, gathering materials and building a set and costume in a short amount of time and taking the performance to the next level in terms of set design, props and costumes will be a challenge. Luckily the group of artists at the core of FREE BBQ CASH GIVEAWAY will be there to lend support and catapult Drazic's Girlfriend to the next level.
A $5 donation will get you a high 5 from Drazic's Girlfriend in person, or if you are not coming to the festival I will scan my hand and sign it and then post it to you so you can high 5 me whenever you want!

A place on the FREE BBQ CASH GIVEAWAY honour board. At 12 noon everyday of the festival a .wav file of a canon firing will sound and all present will salute the honour board. Your support will not be forgotten.

This event is the last scheduled event of the festival, where sections of the created sculpture stage will be auctioned off to raise money for Watch This Space Gallery. There will be a Skype bidding platform available for those interstate or overseas.
