For the Love of an Orange @ PQ 2015

A$10,000
of $9,500 targetyrs ago
Successful on 19th May 2015 at 10:40AM.
For the Love of an Orange is  an audacious and ambitious experimental work. In June 2015 we will be reimagining our project, stripping it back to create a brand new interpretation told through food for the Prague Quadrennial Makers Exhibition. As the only project selected from Australia, this opportunity is a unique honour.

After the Quadrennial we will be heading to Belgium to work with internationally acclaimed Object Theatre specialist Stéphane Georis, considered the best in the world in his practice. These two opportunities will not only develop our project, but also challenge and enrich our arts practice.

Thanks to Creative Partnerships Australia’s MATCH program, every dollar you give to this campaign will be matched dollar for dollar, provided we reach our campaign target of $9500

ABOUT THE PROJECT
For the Love of an Orange began its journey as an experimental short film in 2013, since then it has become a large-scale experimental performance incorporating thousands of litres of water, hundreds of oranges, kilos of icing sugar, and a giant stuffed giraffe.

Inspired by Prokofiev's opera 'The Love for Three Oranges' and its absurd fairytale story about a Hypochondriac Prince sent on a magical quest to find love three oranges with Princesses trapped inside. Our work investigates the dichotomy between love as a quest and the deceptions we can fall prey to as we blindly follow our heart's desire.

Our Hypochondriac Prince is 'sick for love' and cared for by a sinewy man, part nurse, part friend, part lover. The performance revolves around this complex, edgy relationship between the two male performers. At times ambiguous, at others familiar and resonant, their relationship explores love, domination, dependence, comfort, service, obsession and gender. Between them, they control and fulfill each other until the quest to find the Princess brings chaos and competition into their once repetitive, clinical and stale world.

For the Love of an Orange has performed at Melbourne's iconic La Mama Theatre as part of 'Into the Black Hole' a season of curated experimental puppetry projects, in the Melbourne Recital Centre's car park as part of 'Where the Wild Things Sing' for the SummerSalt Outdoor Arts Festival, and as a large-scale performance installation selected for the inaugural ‘Setting the Stages’ program supported by the Australia Council to represent Victoria in the Crack Theatre Festival as part of This is Not Art.

WHAT'S NEXT?
For the Love of an Orange is the only project chosen from Australia to perform in the inaugural Makers Exhibition at the 2015 Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space (PQ). After a lengthy and competitive selection process, the chance to perform at PQ is a unique and incredible opportunity.

PQ does not provide any financial support, or accommodation for artists, so with your help and the support of the MATCH program, we need to raise the funds to take four artists to the other side of the world where we can showcase our ideas and fuel the fire of our creative practice.

Makers is PQ’s new, experimental program wherein artists reinterpret the key concepts from theatrical work through food design and performance with food. SO we are spending as much time in the kitchen as we are in the rehearsal room experimenting with ways to reimagine our project as an engrossing and visually arresting food journey.

PQ is the world's largest Exhibition dedicated to Performance Design & Architecture. Over 60 countries from all over the world create pavilions to showcase their work. As well as up to 50,000 thousand spectators, it also attracts international theatre makers, directors, and programmers all hungry to investigate new work.

AND AFTER THAT?
With the opportunity to perform at PQ, we asked ourselves... if we're in Europe, what's the one thing we'd love to do to make our project the best it can possibly be?

There was only one clear option - try to work with world-class master object theatre creator Stéphane Georis. A virtuoso of live performance, objects and chaos - Stéphane is breathtaking (and hilarious) to watch perform and one of our heroes.

We tentatively asked Stéphane if he would work with us developing the role of oranges as performing objects in our work - AND HE SAID YES!! So, after PQ we're heading to Belgium to learn from the best.

Thanks to Creative Partnerships Australia’s MATCH program, every dollar you give to this campaign will be matched dollar for dollar, provided we reach our campaign target of $9500

How The Funds Will Be Used

It's not cheap to send four artists to Europe, but these opportunities are just too good to pass up! Thanks to the MATCH program your pledges will be doubled and go towards:

- Return Airfares x 4
- Accommodation x 4 for 3 weeks
- Creating and Presenting our PQ Performance Costs
- Stéphane Georis' Artist Fee
- PQ Accreditation & Allowances
- Project Artists Fees x 4

Any fundraising over our $9500 target will go towards the cost of travel between Prague and Belgium, be used to buy consumables as we develop our performance, and absorb some of our personal contributions to the project.

The Challenges

We are honoured and very privileged to have been selected for the Prague Quadrennial 2015 Makers Exhibition, just as we are to work one-on-one with Stéphane Georis. But PQ provides no financial support in any way, no artist fees, no flights, and no accommodation.

Unfortunately our invitation to participate in PQ arrived too late to apply for assistance through Arts Funding Bodies, but through the support of the MATCH program every dollar pledged is matched - doubling our fundraising.

If you can't support our campaign yourself, but believe in our project please share this page with your friends, and follow us to keep in touch with our journey.
