This project is to raise funding for a joint exhibition entitled 'Silence' to be held in Brisbane @
Woolloongabba Art Gallery (www.wag.com.au).Opening on Friday the 13th July 2012.
The funding will go towards a catalogue and materials such as framing and printing.
The exhibition is by Henri van Noordenburg and Eryn Begley, and includes solo and collaborated works concentrating on the theme of silence created around religion, family dispute, and migration.
Henri's work is created by hand carving into a photographic print, with these one off artworks being influenced by etchings of the dutch masters and questioning masculinity as well as one's sense of belonging.
Eryn's sculptural assemblages incorporate reworking old books, found objects, and antique family photography, utilising techniques and processes common in jewellery/metalwork studio practice.
Henri van Noordenburg

My artistic career spans well over ten years with the main focus in documentary photography.
During this time I have had numerous solo and group exhibitions in Australia, Europe and Asia. In 2004 – 2005 I undertook and artists in residency in Estonia 2004 – 2005, this resulted in a major exhibition at the Brisbane Powerhouse which created dialog between local Queensland audience and the Estonian community in Australia, a three year touring exhibition in Europe, the publication Home/Kodu (2006) and website.
My art practice over of the last two years has taken a new direction by experimenting with hand drawing and carving into the photographic print creating one of artworks. By taking a scalpel to the image and scraping away details, the work combines the mechanical with the handmade. In doing so I reinforces the concept of displacement, be it of an individual or an ecosystem, underlining the impact humankind has on the various environments across our planet.

It is this unique technique in combination with of my long running art practice that caught the attention of the Queensland Centre for Photography when they selected me as one of ten Australian photographic artists to present at the Photo L.A 2012.

Eryn Begley
Born in New Zealand, now an Australian citizen. (Have resided in Brisbane since early 2000)
Student at Queensland College of Arts and working at Queensland Art Gallery / Gallery of Modern Art.
Currently in 'Silver Gelatin Print' exhibition in Gympie Regional Gallery.
Featured in 'To That Which Is' exhibition at Queensland College of Art, Brisbane.
Incorporating my cultural beliefs and values in an atempt to address ‘the interconnectedness of all things’ is fundamental when developing the aesthetic of my craft.
My strict religious upbringing encourages an approach that holds a long fascination with art that has connection to ritual, to tradition, to the mystical, and to non-dogmatic spirituality.
Furthermore, I am influenced by religious traditions and iconography, and humor a soft spot for Catholicism, Buddhism and Gnosticism.
This fascination feeds an inquiry into the union of sacred and profane within the everyday, focusing on the importance this union has in the creation of myth.
While craft practices, in particular metalwork techniques, imbue my studio work, I remain open to all forms of creation when investigating a concept.
Choosing to use recycled and found objects in my assemblages, I hope to highlight ‘green’ issues, while making the precious mundane, and the ordinary something valuable.
