Yeah!

Inspired by the street parties of Latin America, we proudly present a one night extravaganza of music, dance, visual art, food and drink, brought together to celebrate the extraordinary spirit of the continent that is most known for its vibrancy and colourfulness.

With a repertoire that spans over 200 recognized genres, the music of Latin America is clearly its most defining cultural trait. Movements such as salsa, bossa nova and cumbia have attracted worldwide audiences. Despite the distance, expatriates from Latin America invariably remain passionately connected to their culture. As the community of the descendants of Latin America grows in numbers here in Australia, so does the presence and demand for solid manifestations of its culture.

Music

After the success of the 2011 event, co-produced with EL TARRO, (700 punters, 100 performers), this year’s Carnaval Latino has gathered together some of Melbourne’s most highly regarded acts for a stronger, louder, bolder encounter of the culture of Latin America.

Clave Contra Clave
Proudly supported by Clave Contra Clave, we present an all-star line up:

●Oscar Jiménez, the charismatic and explosive leader of ARIA-nominated Watussi. Highlights of his recent solo performances include opening for Manu Chao latest tour as well as the warm up slot for Latin superstar Juan Luis Guerra. The Colombian born musician is the local representative in the panel of judges for this year’s Clave contra Clave national Latin band competition. (Clave Contra Clave is one of our main sponsors) http://oscarjimenez-music.com/site/
●Cumbia Cosmonauts, Australia’s first cumbia sound system combining Caribbean offbeat rhythms with raw Afro Sounds and Jamaican Dub elements. Fresh from their European tour, representing the future of electro cumbia http://youtu.be/ETP5vreBBoQ soundcloud.com/cumbiacosmonauts
●Oz Locos, a unique combination of Hip Hop and Reggaeton, fused with a massive live band. They have performed at a stack of festivals including the Bondi South American Festival (2006, 2009), Johnston Street Fiesta (2008, 2009), Darling Harbour Fiesta (2006) and the Latin Block Party (Sydney Opera House 2008). http://soundcloud.com/ozlocos
●Los Cougarmen, an exciting 12 piece Latin Jazz group that blends elements of Salsa, Jazz, and Afro Cuban tradition, paying tribute to the music of Tito Puente, Ismael Rivera and Ray Barretto. soundcloud.com/los-cougarmen
●Neda Rahmani - True Colours Collaboration. 10 incredible dancers, 10 stunning drummers and four vocalists, in an incredible display of talent and energy that keeps crowds on their feet, dancing and clapping. nedalife.tumblr.com (TBC)
●De La Calle, 6 piece Cumbia outfit playing early 20th century Central American cumbias with a contemporary feel. An international group made of musicians from Argentina, Australia, Chile and Colombia.
●Maracatu, an upbeat Afro Brazilian procession which normally parades through the streets of Recife during carnival.
●Agobloco. Cheeky lyrics and contagious rhythms define the popular music of Brazil from the 120s to the 1960s, tailored to a marching band format by Agobloco.
●O’Ziriguidum, an innovative percussion group forging new directions by mixing world rhythms with the sound-power and street-feel of the drums of the Brazilian Samba tradition, as well as elements of Urban Funk and Hip-Hop. (TBC)
●Sonidero Esperanza Sonidero Esperanza is a neo-cumbia project that mixes classic cumbia, mexican norteno and tropical sounds all blended with techno & electronic beats. https://soundcloud.com/sonidero-esperanza

The Challenges

According to past experiences, the date of the event can be hindered by the Footy finals (last time we presented it, was same night of it!). We had 700 guests anyway.
For the project to be successful, we will need to sell 500 tickets and secure some sponsorship or generate $2000 in merchandising (CDs compilation and T-shirt).
