Commonwealth: fundraising by inbetweenspaces
In 2011 and 2012 Brisbane based artist-run initiative inbetweenspaces met
with over 20 people from disaster-affected communities in Queensland and
Victoria to discuss, collaboratively arrange and photograph their belongings. 20 large-scale images of these objects will
travel around Brisbane and Melbourne cities during the 2012 Next Wave Festival. At traffic intersections,
roundabouts and tram stops pedestrians and commuters will be surrounded by
these moving images. By visiting the inbetweenspaces website and facebook page people will be able to track the movement of images around the cities. A Commonwealth artists' book will also be published online.
Commonwealth considers the relations between objects, homes and people by exploring the movements of individuals and the loss and rearrangement of personal objects. This presentation of images seeks to publicly re-imagine the communal impact of the relocation of countless objects and their owners across streets, cities and states.
Funds from this campaign will contribute to:
- The printing and rigging costs for a large outdoor banner in Federation Square, Melbourne.
- The printing of large banner skins for images in Brisbane and Melbourne cities.
Who are inbetweenspaces:
inbetweenspaces is a creative living lab comprising Brisbane-based visual artists Danielle Clej and Ruth McConchie. For the past five years inbetweenspaces have assisted the creation of new, experimental, collaborative works of visual art by local, national and international artists. inbetweenspaces forms intimate, supportive connections with people during the development and exhibition of artworks. Commonwealth extends on previous works by Clej and McConchie through collaborating with many people from different backgrounds, cities and towns. It continues inbetweenspaces’ history of process-based, cross-disciplinary and hybridised- projects that critically engage with dialogues around collaborative practice.
